In my opinion, spires are cheating haha
Unfortunately the CTBUH includes spires in height as they are part of the structure of the tower...giving them a dubious loophole to pad their tallness. I maintain the tower's worth should be measured from it's roof, where the functioning part of the building's structure terminates. But I am not the CTBUH... >.<

100% agree. I think spires are a cheesy way of measuring a buildings height.
 
^...now church spires on the other hand are a fairly functioning part of the building. But when it comes spires on office or condo towers however, nobody is going up there to ring a bell or give a call to prayer. Just saying.
