It's clear now with all lanes re-opened that the cause of congestion is the limited capacity of the 3 offramps that feed downtown, and this is really only an issue in the morning rush hour and evenings when there are events. As opposed to during construction the work zone acted as a bottle neck actually smoothing out distribution to the offramps in a way, although the tradeoff was being congested about 18 hours/day, with increased overall delay.

Will be interesting to see how the performance is affected once the east end is reconstructed and ramps to Lake Shore reinstated after Section 5 is complete.

Pretty sure the city never claimed a time delay, that’s just a ballpark figure from drum. However, the count of vehicles is a measured, averaged value.

I remember a time was given pretty much every time the tear down option was presented.

I’m not familiar with the particular alternative shown in the picture, the continuous inlet/outlet of the DVP on Lakeshore certainly helps. But yes those figures are very hard to believe for AM peak, now or ~10 years ago when these studies were done.

Just the introduction of signals would have triggered 3-5 minutes of delay even at 2am. Morning peak would have been even worse.

Report from the morning commute in: Traffic was still pretty smooth eastbound into the city with just the standard slowdown around the York and Jarvis off ramps. Interesting how people struggle with those interchanges.

The Westbound from DVP through to the Park Lawn construction was flying though. Looks like that direction is the bigger winner so far since the section opened up fully.

We saw similar after they reopened the last construction section (Jarvis to Cherry?) a few years ago. It will soon be back to normal once people realize it's reopened.

I had to cross Gerrard St about 4 times around 5 pm today. I was surprised how much less traffic than usual for a weekday. Partially I'd think because it's Monday.

Perhaps a lot of people took off Hallowe'ek?

And interestingly, that report identifies the Grand Magazine - York St part being planned for 2027.

This would put it at the same start time as the Etobicoke portion of the rehabilitation.

I feel that this phase (2027-) will be worse than the last phase for traffic congestion. Isn't there work going on elsewhere in 2027 too? Etobicoke? The hybrid connection?

I actually think it will be a lot less impactful if they can keep 3 lanes going to the Spadina exit, which depending on configuration *may* be possible.

Without that, yea, it's going to be a complete mess.

Well I mean, the city pretty much does controlled concrete chipping along this stretch every other day. Glad they finally realized that this stretch is deteriorating like crazy and woke up to decide to action something.

That it's only 15-years is concerning. Wasn't the last rehab of the slab (but not the bents) only about 10 to 15 years ago?
