Nowhere in the lease has the province agreed to such a thing, nothing remotely close. Take a look for yourself: IO - Ontario Place Therme Canada Lease
Listen...I had to enter a doug ford, Yolo, legacy defining, toronto mayor, I'm about to announce massive deficits might as well go crazy mode for a moment.

According to the AG report - As Master Developer, the Province bears the costs to develop ....the last mile to connect public transit from Exhibition Place to Ontario Place

And on Pg 83. Of the contract you kindly linked it states that there's a requirment to build "terminal, station or similar
infrastructure that is used to provide the “last mile connection” to the Ontario Line and Exhibition Place (the “Metrolinx Terminal”

Now I'll be the first to tell you that this contract doesn’t bind the province into specifically extending the Ontario line LOL. But they're going to have to build something...not advocating for it btw cause everything about this plan is insane.

But if you are building a convention center of the magnitude being contemplated it either needs to be central or transit accessible.

The article mentioned several other spots for this convention center like the Port lands but that seems even less likely due to seriouslack of high capacity transit...

Of course there is the fact that ford gave himself the power to take over the ex grounds, so maybe thats where this is all going.

Eitherway. You tell me whats crazier. Ford building the metro convetion center on an island without transit accesses or with some type of transit accesses.

A street car sure as hell won't cut it.

Wtaf is all of this money coming from exactly? I grew up in Mike Harris austerity, amalgamation, tuna, teacher strikes, cancelled subways. Fights over opera houses etc. This dude is tunnelling the 401, building islands to rehome a convention centre, making a shittier science centre over a giant parking tub, throwing money at spas, subways etc.

I feel like brains got poisoned around 2011, and progressive politics has been banned here. We can’t even elect liberals without having them act like Brian Mulroney conservatives. I’m oddly still a Miller-ite, and that dude would never have been allowed even a fraction of this spending spree.

It’s like the enshittification of minds. Nobody cares. Just make Dougie the PM.

That being said. Sure. Would love the MTCC to be better. Dunno what’s legit possible. But I loathe having to truck out to the Exhibition for everything.

An event like Fan Expo keeps getting bigger- to the point where I haven’t been in years because I can’t take the crowds. But it deserves to be downtown. And we can’t keep taking interesting stuff away from an already hollowed out core.

Unless it's East Harbour, Downsview or the Ex. I can't image anywhere big enough to have 2 million square feet of contiguous space with at least one subway/go station and near a highway. I think either would be fine with the slight exception for the current barren state of Downsview and lack of hotels.

This Lakefill idea, and really this whole thing is nothing more than a scramble for media attention and distraction as Doug struggles to find a reason to be re-elected, but the bread is stale and the circuses are boring...

An artificial island is never happening. Once you start talking about reclaiming land, you are entering federal jurisdiction. On the scale that is being discussed, you could effectively consider such a project impossible.
For context on modern lakefill projects, the city of Mississauga recently completed an environmental review for a new marina and housing project. The review took 6 years to complete I think. So I imagine any infill for a convention centre could not begin for many years, even if fill was available. Also, if fill is that available, there are evidently more shovel-ready projects than the convention centre.

This combines my previous sarcastic suggestion for the Ontario Line extension via tunnel with Doug's Dream for an off-shore convention centre. While I don't think it's remotely a good idea, a voice in my head says if we saw it proposed for somewhere in Asia, someone would think it was brilliant. There's a good chance a similar sketch exists already deep within the Ford Brain Trust.

Went to the annual Auto Show last week and I felt embarrassed that the place still looks exactly like it did in the 80's, and is indeed a confusing maze. Just terrible. Fugly outside, too.
What is confusing about escalators? They are mostly stacked or continuous flow escalators. The only issue is traversing from the north to the south. If they could improve that connection that's all that's necessary. The place is booked constantly.

This would make more sense if the track was above water here, Øresund Bridge style. As well as making it dual purpose to truck in goods and services, FYI...

...since this is all nuts, might as well go all the way with this. >.<

To add to this, the Mississauga study is for an area that has already seen infill in the past for the breakwater, and is to be connected to land, making the project relatively simple in comparison to what an entirely new island would entail. Building a new convention centre on an island would also involve tunnelling and/or the creation of causeways for transportation which adds extra layers to the complexity of such an assessment. You are probably talking 10+ years for the assessment before you could even consider building. While the feds could absolutely expedite the process, I doubt they would do so for a convention centre, since this is usually saved for projects like ports or terminals.

If the concrete folks in the Portlands and Redpath picked up and left, could we not infill the island/cherry beach connection? Also wondering if all that stuff being dug out on Ontario Line wouldn’t just be used for the Billy Bishop runway extension.

Also -likely reaching- but wondering if building out infill would help with beach erosion and thus qualify for federal funds on environmental preservation. Crazy?

The City needs a source of concrete conveniently located and 'the concrete folk' in the Portlands are not going anywhere. Of course, we COULD fill in the whole Lake but......
