LOL that image has the runway just shy of 3.5km.
YYZ's 06L runway is 3km exactly.
Current runway length is 1.2km
I dont think ford is proposing to send 787's or a380s down there, hes not that ignorant.

Even he is proposing things like a220 which have a takeoff length of 1.5-2km.

The noise is a big thing, the lakefill... not so much
Oh trust me, Doug Ford is that ignorant and idiotic.

He would've allowed for all wide-body planes such as 787s, a380s, and 747s to land Billy Bishop if it was physically able to handle planes of those sizes. Because the infrastructure at city centre airport cant handle it, that's why we're not hearing of it.

We may live in a busy city, but the Toronto Islands are really a crown jewel oasis of calm. It’s like if they proposed putting a roller coaster park in the middle of Central Park.

The issue isn’t just Jets; it’s the inevitable increase in landing slots, and then traffic, all funneled to the same small area of the city.

I think what stands out as problematic here is airport access. The only way in and out is limited public transport, a small taxi stand, rental car, or walking.

Transit expansion here wouldn’t be great value for money and swanky jet-setters wouldn’t be caught dead on transit anyway.

I worry the next step in DoFo logic is to build (another) giant waterfront parking structure.

Actually, with Porter, it would actually be good as Porter flies to smaller cities.

I don’t totally disagree with this view, but even things like a bridge to the island are opposed by the residents.

This reminds me of how a lot of people want the Portland lens to remain a permanent park. We’re in a severe housing shortage, but people are nimbys about having more housing as well?

Selfishly, part of what makes the Toronto Islands great is that the access is limited. If/when there were to be a bridge, there would be hordes of people on the island and the magic would be gone.

Practically, people don’t understand that you can’t just build a fixed bridge over the Eastern/Western gaps, it would have to swing or raise for very large cargo ships to get in and out. And because the bridge has to be on one end or the other ;(it ain’t gonna be from Harbourfront to Center Island), you have the secondary problem of transit or car congestion at both of those remote locations.

All of which is to say, if the issue is ferry cost, subsidize the pricing more. If the issue is allowing more people to be on the islands on a given day, sorry but No.

I don’t think YTZ is turning into the next Boston Logan here or anything. More like growing from 2 million annual passengers to 4 million or something. End of the day it will likely retain limited operating hours and is a single runway for small planes. London City does around 3.5 million - that’s probably what we’d be looking at.. that’s an average of around 10,000 people a day to and from the airport, equal to the number of cars typically seen on a moderately busy 2 lane road.

What about a tunnel?
Even better, a transit tunnel.

I have to wonder if MLSE/Rogers was whispering in a certain someone's ear heavily pushing for this so their teams and the visiting teams don't have to deal with landing all the way out at Pearson and instead all those charter jets could land so much closer to the arenas/stadiums so situations like that embarrassing debacle with the Utah Mammoth last year won't be repeated again. We know Dougie loves his pro-sports.
Players and teams aren't flying on planes that can land at the island; they use regular planes that are chartered and have all business class seats. For example, the Canadian teams use Jetez by Air Canada (note for advertisg reason the Blue Jays aren't listed as using it because of WestJet being a sposnsor but they don't have corporate charter planes)

Same problem - you aren’t going to tunnel under the longest area of the inner harbour.

But as long as we’re dreaming, why not gondolas from the Scarborough Bluffs?
Why not the shortest area? Connect it to the streetcar line there.

If you're going to suggest something silly, lets just backfill the gap.Done. Problem solved.....

London City airport is not right next to the premiere park space or tourist attractions in London

10K passengers is around 200 small jet flights maybe? Over a 14hr window for landing slots? So that’s a jet taking off or landing every 4 minutes, all day long. Thats the problem.
