To Hydro a week is a normal person's month or more!

Somewhere above someone was obsessing about the old wooden Hydro poles on Queens Quay at Rees/Robertson.

I asked WT and they replied as follows:
"
"Thank you for reaching out to Waterfront Toronto and for sharing your concerns.

For questions or follow-up regarding the remaining poles and wiring along Queen’s Quay, Toronto Hydro has advised that residents connect directly with Shannon Jackson at Toronto Hydro: SJackson@TorontoHydro.com, CCed on the email.'"

I assume that sooner or later they will respond, if/when they do I will post an update but I am sure it will take a while to respond and FAR longer to get the damn wooden poles removed.

The squeaky wheel gets the grease. We should coordinate to send repeated emails over a few months — not all at once so it doesn't appear coordinated. She'll get sick of hearing about these poles and expedite their removal. If the Union Station pole isn't gone by the end of April, I'll ask Jack to do a follow up. Shannon will not like seeing her name published in The Toronto Star's The Fixer being associated with failing to fix what Hydro promised to fix.

I believe they are just getting started on painting the concrete blocks as was originally planned, not removing them.

I thought so too but then wondered why they're installing this longer term fencing, bolted into the ground. Painting could have been handled with moveable fencing, it only takes a few hours to dry. In fact, these have been painted at least once before and there was no long term fencing installed. I just went past one day and noticed that all the blocks had been repainted. Also, why only three blocks at a time? These three in particular match the number of bollards on the crosswalk on the York side.

Though Hydro (and TTC and City) are slow to remove old poles and equipment, we should remember that if a pole has any 'attachments' then the pole owner needs to nag the attachment's owner to remove it first. Also, though pole removal is important the installation of new poles is undoubtedly more important and staff are limited. "Shaming' people is occasionally a good tactic but not if over-used.

The Union Station side of the bridge is open. You can get into CIBC Square but access is still blocked to the bus station.

Really cool tidbit for rail fans. You can see the trains and platforms from within the bridge.

A few more tidbits from today:

√ The uneven paving on the York side has been fixed.

√ The three fenced off concrete blocks at Front/Bay are still in jail. Clearly more than painting going on there. It could be something else like fixing a notorious persistent leak into the streetcar platform but I believe it makes sense to remove those blocks and replace them with bollards to match the York side.

√ Something odd is happening in the Great Hall. This seems too localized to be about fixing the floor.

Does platform 3 continue far enough East that you'd find yourself at the Backstage bridge? Might this be a potential future PATH ... path*?

*Technically, you shouldn't be on the platform unless you have a valid fare but I don't think anyone has ever had their fare checked if they weren't on a train. ma

These have now been replaced with "caution- wet floor" signs. The tape has been removed from the cracked and loose floor tiles in most places. Presumably something to do with fixing the floor.

If they’re doing the floor, they would have to do so very quickly. There’ll be a pause on public works leading up to the World Cup. You can see how the city has been buzzing with sidewalk construction, road paving and other works. I don’t think the timing fits to start something now, not to mention this was just procured from the original quarry only recently. They’d have to mine the stone to match and shape the slabs then install it.

No the furthest east it goes is right at this entrance

It doesnt look like those in charge of wayfinding are planning to use the new bridge to CIBC Square to direct travellers to the bus terminal. New signage is going up and there is no sign of (unintended pun) bus terminal direction.

There are signs pointing down and throughout the Bay Concourse though.

This is most certainly the most confusing way around, so much so that they have to put up breadcrumbs every 20 ft to keep people heading through the Bay Concourse, through the narrow doors into Scotiabank Arena, down the concourse and up the escalator when they could just have Bus Terminal signs pointing to CIBC Square and down the escalator into the Bay East Teamway.

Perhaps in the future when the Bremner Concourse is open, if there were a more obvious way up without having to go through Scotiabank Arena, that would work because it would keep people in Union Station through most of the way there, but now that route is way too circuitous.
