Are stations also that expensive when they are above ground? That's why I took the liberty of envisioning so many stations lol because many of them would exist on the existing rail line along this routing. I thought they were only prohibitively expensive when underground.
I'm not opposed to it, just wary of replicating potential future GO RER service. If it actually were to function as Berlin's S-Bahn, we'd have no need for other rapid transit on the Lakeshore West line (other than new stations) in my view.
Crossposting my vision from the Fantasy Maps thread. I think the most practical way to extend the line west is to take advantage of existing rail tracks while also not duplicating GO service. I'd always preferred a Dufferin alignment but lately I've been thinking that it may be better to think...
This is what I envision the full line looking like. My hope is that this would set the stage for northward extensions up to Jane and Finch on the west side and up to Steeles on the right side.
Not a proper map design owing to my lack of graphic design skills lol, but just a musing of what I think could be a great solution for the western extension of the Ontario Line. I had always been in favour of an extension north up Dufferin; however, I think there's great potential in using the...
My hope is that St. Clair, Spadina, and whatever is happening at the Harbourfront all eventually get the same treatment as Finch, ideally all of them under their own designation (like the trams in Berlin, T1, T2, T3, etc).
I think the city is going to have no choice but to either go all in with full signal priority, or split the line into two sections. The difference in service between both parts (under and above ground) is abysmal.
I am not on board, though I am watching a livestream, and it seems to be zooming through the underground sections (thankfully). The surface stops, well... that's another story.
I will chime in with my annoyance at the fact that they envision the hotel component of this development being a boutique hotel, which usually means $$$. Not that it's up to College Park to fix this but Toronto has a dearth of affordable 2-3 and even 4 star hotels (like Ibis or Travelodge) which...
In my wildest dreams they'd tie this together with the long-planned redevelopment of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre and fit it nicely next to Union lol. One can only hope!
Would be cool if they could incorporate features that make it more amenable and inviting to passersby, like a small sugar museum, a sugar sampling shack, a sugar-themed cafe, or an exhibit about the history of sugar refining in Canada, idk.
Still find it kinda wild that there was nowhere else to build a new 200 metre tower that didn't require demolishing this building, which I always thought was quite handsome and one of the best examples of the mid-century apartment block we had in the Village. I hope we don't regret this loss.
