Presser out from the Feds today announcing a specific on-base project for military housing at Esquimalt.

The release also implies more announcements are coming......including one or more sites in Toronto.

That's a lot of rooms. I'm not familiar with Esquimalt at all but I imagine it has been impacted but accommodation availability like a lot of other facilities. Most CAF accommodation is old, so from that perspective, it will be an improvement. Single room accommodation is, in military parlance, barracks or 'shacks'. No mention of upgrades to detached or semi-detached Residential Housing Units (formerly Private Married Quarters) which are just as old.

The presser ties the announcement to "training". I don't know if there is a plan for expanded training on the west coast or that's just the government's way of describing the military ('when they aren't fighting, they're training').

I doubted that you would be wrong! :-> Pity they added a floor to the Moss Park Armoury last year - that would be as great site for housing on top!

As discussed by @kEiThZ in one of our Federal threads............ there will no housing over an active armory. That is strictly contrary to policy.

Whether or not the Moss Park Armory might be consolidated to Fort York or other wise relocated is a different question, and one that I have no insight on at this time.

Yes, I know there are policies about armouries and civilians but this is clearly an underused and rather ugly site that could contribute more. It is used but .... See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moss_Park_Armoury

There was a discussion on the value of Armouries at this thread ( https://urbantoronto.ca/forum/threads/g-m-surplus-government-lands-lazy-lands.38466/ ) and I do not disagree with the arguments made by several of us but it does seem unreasonable that an Armoury cannot ever share a building with anyone, if that is actually true.

Not much net new rooms. It's mostly replacing an existing barracks.

What I find frustrating is how little they think outside the box. Giving up the space to civilians would be a problem. But they could build a military housing block at some of the armouries and offer it as subsidized housing to reservists. There's a ton of single reservists who would benefit from the normal cheap singles quarters room. This would help take the pressure off the local housing a tad. And SQs can be built a lot denser than any condo complex since even the most luxurious SQs are basically Motel 6 rooms. There's a lot of reservists who are single and/or university students who could benefit.

Driving to Pittsburgh recently, i noticed most of the fast food places i was at, were employed by mostly young teenagers working summer jobs. Like it used to be here. Now just about every single fast food worker in the GTA are all grown adult TFW's

Pretty bad young people can't even find an entry level job in Toronto these days. I worked at Pizza Hut when i was young a teen. Got my foot in the door and worked my way up to fine dining.

Continuing on the theme of Canada's TFW program, an international report from the UN using language about that resembles what I and @kEiThZ have been saying for some time:

I'll place the full article title here:
