It's not isolated, but it is not integrated. Quebec power is not electrically synchronized with any other jurisdiction. Exports to the US (I don't know if or how much they import) are through either High Voltage Direct Current which is then changed to alternating current ('inverted') at the point of interconnect, or by Alternating Current which must be connected to the customer (US or Canadian) via 'intertie' equipment.
Notwithstanding some technical details though - I believe Quebec can shut down flow to the USA, very, very quickly. Hours not weeks or months.

Looking at Stats Canada up until 2020, other provinces are higher than I thought. BC has increased significantly - though that was during Covid.

I can't find a more recent graph, but the latest raw data puts exports down a lot - only 0.4 million MW-hrs in November 2024. Maybe not so much of a weapon after all::

My employer exports to the US. We’ve decided that with the Canadian dollar at record lows to the USD providing exchange rate advantages (for sales in USD), we’re enacting an immediate 25% price decrease to our long-standing US partners, IOW, we’ve agreed to cover the cost of any tariffs they have to pay. It’ll hurt margins in the short term, but we’re playing the long game.

We’re 1 month down on Trump, 47 months to go. The world will go on. Hopefully Ottawa will wisely use the windfall it receives from Canadians who import anything from the US.

Let’s shop Canadian….

It is time a viable Canadian social media website be created to sever our ties to American antisocial media conglomerates.
It would be nice. Just the spam on Twitter alone is enough to never want to post anything. Can't post there without two scantily-clad "females" with new accounts and 0 follows "liking" your post.

Canada is facing economic destruction, and this is your big concern. You want Canada to "sever ties" to American-owned social media platforms? Why? Do you believe Canadians should not be able to access X? I believe in free speech, which means having access to any website in the world that I choose to access. I want to hear what the rest of the world is saying. I want to add my voice to the narrative. I have no interest in an echo chamber.

Guess what there is a solution to this "problem" Unsubscribe to X. Problem solved.

Yes they could. About 92% of all Hydro Quebec output is hydro-electric, so they could simply pond or spill the water. I couldn't find any data on their historic by-month exports. Traditionally, Quebec itself it a winter-weighed consumer due to the high prevalence of electric heating. Turning off the tap would bite into their bottom line. HQ has a debt of about $51Bn (about 3x Hydro One), largely from far north development costs and payments to FNs.

However, I did find this. It is Canada-wide, but seems we have turned into a net importer. They mention droughts in BC as well as cheaper NG prices in the US as contributing factors but, regardless, it seems to indicate that turning down the lights might not be as big an impact as some think.

I would just tax any net proceeds from US social media platforms (revenues from ad sales and subscriptions in Canada less spending on domestic hosting and staff) at 80%.

Any social website that becomes popular will end up becoming a cesspool the way the current crop has. It's a function of the type of website + human nature, not the nationality of its owners.

There is certainly a compelling argument for our society weaning itself off of social media, but the idea that the problem is that there isn't enough CanCon in the field is a false dichotomy.

That’s a hard ask. We’re only 40 million strong (less than Spain), and half of those are too old or too young to use social media much. I’m 53 and don’t use social media besides family chats. But I like your idea, and here’s some Canadian social media startups from 2021. I can’t find this for 2023-2024.
