^ I am quite sure that was the intent -- there are only so many ways one can wrap a box. Considering its location it seems to be wanting a sign introducing the University. I like that they have turned an obscure alley into an act of celebrating a campus entry.that also doubles as a defining entry point to the athletic functionality of the building. Does it say, "Hey, look at me!" It sure does. I can now see that when it arrives path-wise at SUB it will allow for a directional change on the area deemed to be a pedestrian spine running East-West at 90 degrees. I loved the butterdome... this will be a more than adequate replacement. I'll grant you that it proudly shouts out the University's colors.

Yes it will be a great entrance into the university. I showed this to a number of people and they all like it.
I read through the RFP. this answers a lot of questions. and the work I have done on this building over the years , this does respond to a number of short comings. This facility was an energy hog. And when you trained in it , it was dark and dingy. I am looking forward to seeing the finished product. Not that I will train in there anymore but I still look forward to it. What I can say is our sports and recreation centres are some of the more unique architecture in this city. I am always impressed by what some architects can do with just a bunch of boxes.
Yes we loose an iconic looking building but we gain a modern take on it with this. It will be talked about. It will be identifiable. It will still be called the butterdome.

Yknow what... I actually like it. Gives me a Minecraft kinda vibe lol, and the windows at street level are 💯

The addition of the canopy should significantly improve the walkability of the street. It looks good and besides the weather protection that canopies provide to pedestrians they reduce the massing of a building to a human scale. The new build with one on 112 street and 86 Avenue turned out great and this one should tooo. More building should incorporate a canopy into their design.
