Pretty cool. Alas, the company seems to be a paper initiative. One employee, the CEO, on LinkedIn. Merchant data centres, we should think of them like merchant upgraders from 20 years ago. They need to secure both suppliers and customers, and without them they'll sit as paper projects forever.

Some will move forward, and sign a 100 MW tenant, or be bought whole. But colour me skeptical that even 1/10th of the proposed will ever pour concrete.
Could also be a front for another company

Seems likely. The AI bubble seems to be more about accounting tricks than tech progress.

That is not what I meant. Hyoerscalers like Amazon and Microsoft often use other companies to be the data center of record for competitive reasons or to discourage local opposition

Makes sense, could very well be the case too.

While I think AB has some great natural advantages for DC hosting, I'm still highly suspicious of all the hype.

And a quick follow up. Possible pipeline to the Port of Churchill
With today's approval of the Baffinland project there are potentials for economies of scale along the Hudson Strait - not for the entire route, but some of it.

Churchill still has major hurdles, but would be a much shorter pipeline, potentially offsetting higher shipping costs using specialized ice breaking tankers (if that is feasible given the wind conditions continually closing a channel and pressing towards the port). They also have to confirm it won't cause a regional extinction of polar bears.

Edit: Churchill is far more suitable for shipping to Europe. Shipping west would be possible a few weeks a year at best.

Churchill makes no sense. It is on the Atlantic basin where oil demand is flst to declining, and couldn't provide year round, reliable shipping even with ice breakers. It as been a fantasy for over a century.

AI is definitely in a bubble. That being said, AB has competitive advantages that it needs to pursue:
-deregulated energy market
-cold weather
-lowest costs natural gas in the world
-biggest one: the Provincial government collects royalties on gas based on price and volume. It is highly motivated to increase gas consumption. Most jurisdictions would not see much employment or tax revenue from data centers

Would a pipeline to the great lakes -> St. Lawrence seaway work better, or is the max vessel size too small?

Churchill does seem odd but if a major energy company is looking there must be something worth looking at. Those companies are not charities. Europe would be a buyer of natural gas... how much is hard to say but the market isn't zero.

too small. there is an existing pipeline to Montreal where larger ships can be loaded/unloaded. It currently supplies Quebec City with shuttle tankers. Used to handle imports for Ontario. Maybe it could do more.
