40 years ? Mirabel was declared a white elephant by the time it opened. Its one positive contribution was providing proof that a Pickering airport wasn't needed.

- Paul
It was a white elephant because access was inconvenient and they didn't close Dorval, if I recall.

…and companies like Air Canada moved a lot of their operations out of Quebec after the political climate caused another exodus. =

Well it certainly contributed to that perception. But Pickering airport, like the original federal government plan for Montreal, is only about 30 km from downtown. Mirabel is about 60 km from downtown.
Michael Schabas has his own idea for high speed rail, in this unsolicited submission. Ignore the spelling errors.

Gosh, he's at the drawing with crayons on napkins stage of his golden years. He'll be yelling at the clouds soon!

The choice of obscure station names is ... cute. And Joliette+Shawinigan! Well, that will lead to some cool new bridges and/or tunnels. Ultra-convenient for me ... but really screws over T-R. And not going near downtown Quebec City is an interesting choice - literally reversing VIA's early 1980s reversal of CPs 1970s closure.

St. Roch isn’t actually that bad for Quebec City, actually, as St. Roch is the old commercial centre just north (and below) the National Assembly and Old City.

But “Kingson–Murvale” is a really silly place for a station. And the Hamilton station placement makes me think he mixed up his HSRs.

NL posted a week or 2 ago that apperently notices have went out

Notices are imminent, most haven't yet gone out.

But notices are not 'intent to expropriate', they are ' your property is of interest'. *

* not exact wording, but they are not an expropriation claim, at this stage, though they certainly may be an omen of such to come

The Hamilton mountain spur idea is hilariously terrible. He wants a massive tunneled alignment to serve Hamilton’s suburbs and an airport with like 8 flights a day.

A friend of ours has received one for a highway expansion that likely won't happen in any of our lifetimes. I'm not sure about expropriation legislation but it could also put a lock on things like zoning changes and building permits until such time as the property is actually expropriated or the notice is rescinded.

I know someone that when they are ready to sell, they can only sell to the MTO at market value.

By and large, good piece, well thought out, does a good job of separating his view from those of the broader public.

However, he has one thing very wrong......he argues there is no tunnel required to the Union Station connection, seemingly, because he's under the impression GO will terminate a host of services at East Harbour and Exhibition.

I don't know what has given him this idea......but unless someone is fooling me big time.....there is a slightly greater chance of hell freezing over. I do agree the service should go to Union, but I don't think tunnelling can be avoided.

Things are moving a bit faster here than is typical. You're on point.....but keep in mind the enabling legislation here gives Alto sweeping powers in regard to expropriation that are more....'liberal' than the norm.

I wasn't aware if sale was restricted (it might be) but it would certainly limit marketability otherwise. She was under the impression that if she sold now, they would tear her house down - they won't be a landlord.
