^ That's what I have been trying to get across... The energy expended in dealing with snow events in this manner is about half the energy expended for conventional snow removal with salt, sand, trucking, and plowing. It also requires closer attention to the roadway/sidewalk structure.

Lots of retrofits needed for drainage as well. Maybe brick walkways would be easier to repair?

I agree with Archited, on paper it makes a lot of operational + financial sense in certain locations.

Frankly it is surprising to me the U of A has never implemented it on their main campus. They already have the central heating plant they could connect to and they spend a fortune on snow removal and sanding/salting all the outdoor walking paths around campus.

The Idea of snow melt on the streets and sidewalks goes back to the early 60s. Back then it was using waste heat from Rossdale.

I think 215 Street and Stony Plain Road has to be one of the most dangerous intersections.

Well at least on the north side of Henday. On the southside it is a pretty big mess. Hopefully they will finally tidy it up to make more sense since south of Ellerslie it is a good road.

I'm a little confused how 41 Ave from QE2 to James Mowatt is that expensive. The portion from the highway to Allard Rd is basically already twinned, it would just need some changes at the Allard Rd intersection, then the block between Allard and James Mowatt. Unless there's land acquisition included in that figure maybe? Made more confusing when comparing to the 66 Street upgrade, which includes a bridge and about 5x the length being almost the same price.
