From LinkedIn, confrimation that the F59's got more than a repaint.

Revitalizing a Classic: ONTC + Metrolinx Partnership

Earlier last year, Ontario Northland Transportation Commission (ONTC) and Metrolinx joined forces to modernize some of the oldest locomotives in our fleet—the iconic F59s, which have been serving the Greater Toronto Area since the mid 1990’s.
After 35 years of reliable service, these locomotives are getting a well-deserved upgrade. The overhaul includes rebuilt main engines and a new OEM-standard Em2000 microprocessor control system, designed to boost performance and improve emissions. The first F59 will be tested in Northern Ontario shortly, and yes, they’ll be rolling back into service in the coming months with a fresh new livery to match their renewed capabilities.

558 has had the reporting mark "GOTX" added underneath the numbers on its sides.

Possibly a sign it might be getting sent to North Bay for refurbishment? (since as far as I know it was only repainted so far)

Someone asked about this a while back: the new MCI coaches have an exterior verbal warning, along with a strobe light, when making a turn.

Was able to confirm from a source that from the batch of Metrolink units Metrolinx bought, the F59PHIs are not going to be restored for service, and are just for parts. Sorry foamers!
I thought they were going to get 27 new locomotives that was announced back in January of 2024 iirc

odd that they repainted before rebuilding...wouldnt the latter cause damage to the paint when they start the heavy work? then they will either have to repaint the damaged areas or theyll enter service looking like crap.
It's pretty standard for North American diesel locos to do it this way.

On the F59, all of the roof panels come off in large assemblies, which allows for easy overhead access via crane. There is also a lot of space between the exterior walls and the engine itself, so a lot of the smaller work is still easily accomplished without worrying about access or scratching shiny paint. And the side access doors and other panels easily can be removed.

With freight diesel locos, the entire hood can get unbolted from the frame in 2 or 3 sections, making access even easier.

So long as they don't drop something really heavy on the sides - or a roof panel on reinstallation - it will be fine.

Metrolinx declined to answer detailed questions for this story. Lyndsay Miller, a spokesperson for the transit agency, wrote in a statement that the internal fleet strategy "is still in development and is not finalized."

LOL

So they procured used locomotives but won't refurbish then to be put into service.

No new locomotives are being purchased.

There is one F59ph being sent to North Bay to be refurbished.

They could award more contracts for coach refurbishment. There is CAD as well as GR rail that could take on the work. It's just a matter of funding.
