Porters YHM prices don't seem rock bottom; economies of scale are lower but so are their fees. For the handful of April flights I checked, Flair Airlines from Pearson is within $50 for the same dates (sometimes less, sometimes more). Both charge for carry-on baggage.
But that's the thing. Flair has an extra 50 seats they can sell and likely do sell over Porter on every single flight. Porter's not even selling 132 seats on most flights. No matter how you slice it, the cost per seat is much higher than their competitors. Flair has less than half the tails that Porter has but can offer the same number of daily seats system wide. Porter has been surviving through sale and leaseback cash. Where's the money gonna come from now? SLB of 6 Q400s is not indicative of a healthy financial picture. Porter would be much further ahead by not starting service from YHU at all. Cash is king right now and they should be doing all they can to preserve it. If that means making hard decisions and rescinding leases, reducing staff and discontinuing the really underwater routes, they need to do that now and not wait. I've seen this movie before and the ending is always the same, unfortunately. A lot of good people will get hurt but that's the nature of the biz.

I didn't mean to imply it was easy for Porter financially; as you point out they're hamstrung by past decisions like equipment purchases.

I just meant the fares they charge at YHM are not actually all that attractive for consumers; not enough for anyone west of Mississauga to go to that airport.

The new terminal at YHU/MET will be a nine-gate building built for and partly paid for by Porter. It is twice at close to downtown Montreal as Dorval. This would be Montreal’s Island airport. Michael Deluce, Chief Executive Officer, Porter Airlines will be there.

From the press release for the opening.

Managed by YHU Terminal, a dedicated entity, as part of a structured private partnership with: • Porter Airlines • Macquarie Asset Management • MET – Montreal Metropolitan Airport.

The MET has adopted a deliberately limited model for aircraft in order to respect the environment and the expectations of local communities: • Only single-aisle aircraft (code C) are authorized • These aircraft carry an average of 130 passengers, are the quietest on the market, and consume much less fuel than large aircraft • This approach allows for more frequent flights and more destinations, while limiting environmental and noise impact.

Annual capacity: 4 millions of passengers • Intended use at opening: approximately 50 % of capacity • Estimated number of additional flights: 30 to 40 per day.

The MET – Montreal Metropolitan Airport already welcomes several active regional carriers, including Pascan Aviation and Air Liaison, which provide essential connections to several destinations in Quebec and Eastern Canada. In the short term, the airport’s offerings will be enhanced by the arrival of Porter Airlines, a major partner in the commercial terminal project. Other airlines are also expected to join, which will significantly expand the network of destinations available from the South Shore.

I go through YHM on average once every two or three weeks. I have never been on a full Porter aircraft out of any airport including YYZ and the Island. They are privately owned so they do not have to make shareholders happier every month or publish any more data than the government requires. They have deep pockets and I have heard they put up to $10 million into YHM. I hope we get YHU. In the Nordair day’s they did around half a million passengers a week.

When I talk to people flying through YHM they almost always tell me the same thing. There there because it is not Toronto! Second maybe the price.

Wow big news for Hamilton. I'm curious if it will be well used. Personally if we travel to Montreal or Ottawa we usually drive (would love to train) but we usually explore areas either requiring a car, or being our bicycles with us, especially to Montreal.

Honestly I usually drive too, but I'd be a lot more open to flying now as it can avoid having to drive through the GTA.. often I end up paying for the 407 which given those rates these days flying from YHM would be a lot more cost competitive.

That's insane. Twice daily YHM-YHU. Here is the rest of the planned routes with start dates from the press release:

Air Canada made YUL work but couldn’t keep the economics despite having lots of international options… perhaps timing was off?

Porter is really hoping on making MET a massive feed network — it’ll be imperative for flight times to line up perfectly to minimize delays.

However, we already have direct flights (through Porter) to a majority of the MET destinations.

I would’ve expected Porter to maybe jump on Kitchener for this service because of the limited competition and seeing the success of the air canada bus service from that airport.

Fantastic to have the service to YHU/MET, and those other places it connects to where we don't have direct options, Quebec City, Moncton, and Charlottetown.

Well nice connection time to Charlottetown 50 min going 40 min coming back.

YHM and Porter really need to promote awareness. Hopefully the prices will be competitive with YYZ.
