Both of you are correct.
The service was good when they had it and I am a bit surprised they did not keep it. Westjet seems like a bit of a fair weather friend to Edmonton at times, but fortunately in this case others step up and in this case it makes good sense for them to do so.
 
I wonder if WestJet's Alberta-based culture has led to some blindspots toward the scale of the Quebec market...
 
Porter will be flying direct to Montreal's smaller airport Saint Hubert starting June 16 - prices are amazing.

There will be 6 dailies to Montreal (4 AC and 2 Porter) this summer. I don't get why WestJet cancelled the service,

Yes , Airlines ✈️fly routes which they can have demand / make a profit on✅.

The only1️⃣ route (WS) WestJet does ok for Quebec year round from Western Canada 🇨🇦 : is from their WS Fortress Calgary YYC Hub - Montreal YUL - YYC , which operates 3x daily in Summer 2026.
While YYC - Quebec City YQB - YYC operates up to 5x weekly for S26.

Plus WestJet like a lot major airlines around the world 🌎 are still “consolidating” most Domestic,US🇺🇸 / International flights through its main Hubs✅.

YYC - Quebec - YYC - will be up to 11x daily in S26.
Air Canada 5x daily
WestJet up to 4x daily
Porter 2x daily

Amazing stat ... Hub and Spoke certainly has been good for the big 4. Unfortunately the Hub and Spoke model has been awful for YEG. We all know from flying out of YEG that service has not improved. More people drive to Calgary now, and places like Grande Prairie bypass YEG altogether and fly direct to YYC.
 
Interesting chart, although there is some fluctuation in the yearly numbers, generally the three biggest airports had the biggest numbers by far over 10 years.

Edmonton and Ottawa were the only ones to have higher yearly than 10 year numbers. I think one reason is more disruption due to COVID here as no international flights for some time, not sure what happened in Ottawa.

Perhaps the strong yearly numbers mean that is all finally behind us now, but of course now there are other disruptions now.
 
The metro population growth over the last ten years is 300,000 and still growing and yet the passenger growth was only 160,000. This is very anemic by any standard regardless of all the disruptions.
Agreed, although Ottawa's growth and city size is fairly similar to ours. Although perhaps they are in an even worse situation stuck better two much larger cities.

I think it will probably take an organized effort to not travel through certain artificial hubs to fix this situation, but I doubt that our current civic or business leaders have the courage or ability to pull that off.
 
What is a artificial hub? I think driving to Calgary plays a part, I wonder if less traffic from oilfield workers out east has played a part in dampening YEGs numbers to offset the big population gains. It is quite perplexing seeing no growth over a decade where population has exploded for sure.

YOW didn’t grow by 300,000 in the past 10 years and yet they still out grew YEG marginally.
You only need to look at the makeup of the board of directors. YYC has the two mandatory federal appointees and one from Rockyview the rest are all appointed by the city with two from the chamber of commerce. YEG on the other hand have members from Leduc County city of Leduc Sturgeon County and Strathcona County. Lacks focus and competing interests.

I'm fairly sure also not in the interest of people Leduc or Strathcona County to drive to Calgary instead, maybe different for Red Deer but I assume they have no board members.

I believe Alberta's disposable income has been fairly stagnant over the last decade or so, which may partly explain why move people does not necessarily equal a lot more travel.

My point was not that Ottawa is exactly the same as us (I believe they have also grown in population), but the situation and the problems have some similarities.

One which did not have an over 6 million increase in passengers in 10 years.
