^that's an interesting suggestion and one that I could see as plausible, but rumours had an Edmonton to YEG via a heavier rail, think UPX, connection along the QE2 I believe.

But I could see it.

That’s what they had in Edmonton’s Mass Transit Plan (Feb 2020).

^the old masterplans had it in front of the parking similar to YVR with a loop in and a second station halfway to the highway for the business park (again, similar to YVR).

But a dedicated line from there on heavier rail UPX style direct to Downtown with a stop say around the 23ave and Whyte would make sense potentially.

It just has to be a priority, whatever the train looks like or what route it takes, to get it out to the airport ASAP. Edmonton needs this kind of economic force multiplier.
Yup. I think it'd had stronger buy in for provincial and federal funding if you frame it as an "economic growth multiplier" project which the NW extension doesn't have sadly.

I'm biased since the airport connection is what I prefer, but it's something we need if we want to compete with Calgary and other cities for conferences, economic vitality, etc.

Since the mid 1980's Edmonton has lagged Calgary in LRT development, so not surprising if we will be last to get something to our airport.

It also goes with our city's general approach of our transportation network not being very tourist friendly. Heck our train station is in the middle of an industrial area some distance from the city core.

I wonder if the 34 Avenue and 51 Avenue crossings next to Calgary Trail can be replaced with bridges.
I think 51ave is possible to underpass as its about the same distances as the Fort Road underpass. I think an overpass would need more distance than what is available as the over pass at 137th over the tracks is almost 250m. Plus the problem with business entrances.
34 ave is harder as there is only half the distance available to do anything (about 50 meters).

You’d have to redo the whole intersection for Gateway Boulevard to dip down in elevation to meet with 34th Ave. Some driveways to the adjacent businesses from Gateway would be eliminated as a result. Worth it though, as the traffic here is terrible in rush hour when trains roll through.

Well despite the dreams of having a heavy rail to the airport and building a brand new rail all the way to white Ave and downtown, I think I will stick to my hope that they simply extend the LRT from its most southern point to the airport. The way I look at it, even if they were to use a different train set I'd be somewhat surprised to see a completely brand new line running parallel to the currently built and operating LRT. If anything I could see the new train set running from the airport to a terminal Station of the LRT at the already proposed South Extension line of the capital line.

I think the airport would benefit from having both LRT and high speed/commuter rail to the airport. High speed rail will not get close enough to the terminal and will rely on LRT (or shuttle bus...) for that last km trip. A single track starter line should allow for 30 minute headways between the terminal and 41 Ave SW. Future HSR connection station and double tracking when needed.

Economically it is the only reasonable option. Considering a vast majority of people using it will be employees who will have no interest in getting an express line from downtown.

Most flights require travellers to be at the airport at least one hour before departure. If you take the LRT from Central Station to Century Park, and the 747 too the airport, the combined time is about one hour. I’m guessing the LRT all the way the airport will be slightly less.
