GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

Opening day at Rutherford GO's parking garage and new platform. The bridge over the tracks to the new platform is also open. Levels 1-4 are open in the parking garage, the top two levels are still not open. Bike parking was locked when I visited for some reason even though the rest of the...

So I was looking at the plans for RioCan's Colossus Centre (https://urbantoronto.ca/forum/threads/toronto-riocan-colossus-centre-redevelopment-m-68s-riocan-hariri-pontarini.31615/) and noticed this in their context plans (which also showed surrounding proposed developments): Looked...

    Vaughan Toronto | RioCan Colossus Centre Redevelopment | ?m | 55s | RioCan | Hariri Pontarini

I think this would be a good place to copy Singapore's "LRT" (but not actually LRT) elevated people movers to connect the whole area to 407 and VMC subway stations. Just needs to be bidirectional like Singapore and unlike Detroit's one way loop. The whole area's road network probably also needs...

Yes, of course I know that. But I'm comparing it to Finch West, which is literally a streetcar.

York Region Transit: Viva service thread

What DRT has done with axing low demand routes, replacing them with on-demand service, then reallocating that service to key routes, is a pretty good idea - better to have a few functional routes than many nonfunctional ones. I think what Durham has done has to do with how Durham is laid out -...

    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

Wow, what Nanaimo is doing is actually quite commendable. The project seen in that link is proabably the closest to Dutch road design of any road I've seen so far in North America. Ticks most of the boxes: - Protected cycle tracks beside the sidewalk, and with buffer and trees between cycle...

Sheppard Line 4 Subway Extension (Proposed)

Yeah, the fundamental reason why we're stuck with LRT is because we build completely at grade LRT for the same price Spain, Italy, Turkey, Finland, etc. builds fully underground heavy metro in good conditions. When subways cost <100M USD/km, it starts making sense to put subways everywhere...

    Transit Fantasy Maps

Whoops, my bad. I did think it was a bit high. Even at $1.2B though, it's still at $85 USD/km, which is still more expensive than REM, and still more expensive than some Spanish, Nordic, Italian, and Turkish subways. This is a really underappreciated and extremely bad problem.

    Transit Fantasy Maps

Exactly. Even LRT in Toronto is costing more than actual metros in other places. FWLRT is 11km and is costing $2.5B CAD, which is 227M CAD/km or 179M USD/km REM is is 67km and is costing $6.3B CAD, which is 94M CAD/km or 74M USD/km Vancouver's Evergreen extension and Canada line both cost...

    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

Yeah, the North American bright green looks really terrible. It also doesn't contrast enough if beside grass or vegetation. The Dutch red looks a lot better, and it contrasts well with both vegetation and the roadway. Coloured asphalt is also just way more durable than paint. I'm not sure how...

Toronto Toronto | GO Transit: Davenport Diamond Grade Separation | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

The fact that money is being wasted in one place is not an argument for wasting money in other places. And if you can save money by removing excessive features on one project, it doesn’t mean the money should be spent on excessive features on another project. That money should be used for...

    Toronto Toronto | Ontario Line 3 | ?m | ?s

This is really great to see. Toronto seems to have had this weird obsession with putting station boxes underneath roads, causing significant and long term disruption to traffic, it’s nice to see the approach of just buying up some properties beside the street and putting the station there...

Road Safety & Vision Zero Plan

This is just disingenuous. 1. Obviously "not paying attention" and "paying attention" is not binary. Someone is obviously more likely to notice a roundabout, or chicane, or speed bump, than a sign. 2. Even if somebody is completely drunk and continues speeding after bouncing over a speed bump...

Road Safety & Vision Zero Plan

Toronto has permanent curb extensions and chicanes in many places and it seems to be fine. Rumble strips are a good idea, but speed bumps are just more effective. Raised crosswalks are basically just long speed bumps so I don’t think there’s all that much of a problem. When the roadway is flat...

Road Safety & Vision Zero Plan

I agree that simply replacing stop with yield is a bad idea. Yield signs require additional cues to make drivers pay attention - roundabouts are demonstrably safer than normal intersections despite using yield signs, because in addition to reducing conflict points the geometry of a roundabout...

Road Safety & Vision Zero Plan

The problem is not that I think people shouldn’t stop at stop signs, it’s that basically everyone performs rolling stops. And if there is no good evidence to suggest that rolling stops are more dangerous than full stops, then what is the problem?

Dundas St Rapid Transit (Metrolinx, Mississauga, Halton Region, CoT)

Yes, exactly this. If this is anything like Viva then pretty much all the poles get moved anyways, and moving the cycle paths further away from the road is just better for cyclist comfort and safety, and is more conducive to protected intersections. On Yonge after the Viva bus lanes and...

And still cycle tracks beside the road instead of beside the sidewalk… sigh

Sheppard Line 4 Subway Extension (Proposed)

This is not true. Canada Line trains are just completely regular steel wheel third rail powered metro trains, just two cars long. No relation to SRT whatsoever, that’s the Expo/Millennium lines. There’s a reason they chose to stop using bespoke/nonstandard trains for the Canada Line...
