Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in Edmonton

This is a video to inspire any BRT dreamers out there. Perhaps some lessons to learn for Edmonton as our mass transit evolves.

Could Clareview finally be the city's TOD success story?

    Edmonton | Valley Line LRT/ Valley Line West | ?m | ?s | City of Edmonton

Yes, their lookahead video for 2024 says the guideway is due for completion this year.

    Edmonton International Airport (EIA/YEG)

Nolinor, which has its major (southern) operations in Montreal, is opening a sub-base in Edmonton and basing a 737-200 here, to be used largely to supply mining operations in Nunavut: https://www.newswire.ca/news-releases/nolinor-announces-new-sub-base-opening-in-edmonton-826609597.html

    Edmonton | Boyle Street Community Services | ?m | 2s

You may have found the loophole! I wonder if cities will switch their strategies to become facilitators for these types of deals to get around the red tape

    Edmonton International Airport (EIA/YEG)

That's standard procedure for red eye flights because US customs closes around 8 or so. YVR has the same procedures. Just means people have to clear customs when they arrive in ATL.

    New Zoning Bylaw

The Globe had an interesting piece about zoning and housing in Canada and Edmonton comes out looking pretty good: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-housing-density-multiplexes-cities/

    LRT Expansion Planning

I always thought this was the place to run the LRT and I say that as someone who grew up a stone's throw from the future Castle Downs stop. When you want to build high capacity transit, look to where the buses are already running and build there (in this case, 97th St.). But that debate is...

    LRT Safety

Isn't the whole point of low floor trains that they're more accessible, integrated into their surroundings, and easy for people to use? Ridiculous! That Mill Woods station, where the bus connection dumps you into the centre of the LRT platform is just an invitation to walk straight across the...

    Edmonton | Valley Line LRT/ Valley Line West | ?m | ?s | City of Edmonton

I like the way the line west line is growing and I think smart choices were made in its design. But those parking moats between the train and the Misericordia and WEM really bother me.

    Edmonton | South Edmonton Hospital & Health Campus | ?m | ?s | Province of Alberta

The same provincial page shows Edmonton already has two cyclotrons, one at South Campus and one at the Cross Cancer Institute, so this development does not seem unfair to me.

    LRT Expansion Planning

I wish I knew what the economics were for the city to double 747 frequencies all day (forget LRT extension or a bus non-stop to downtown). From the times I've taken it, the demand is there.

    Misc. Transportation Projects

Just spitballing here. I think of the Government Centre bus loop as underused. Could that be redone and opened up as a central terminal?

    Downtown Real Estate

Fair point, but I'm not 100% sure this is backed up by the data. In 1997, the city launched the Capital City Downtown Plan, offering $4.5M in subsidies for the 1,000 units built downtown. The downtown neighbourhood profile shows that after years of stagnation, the population downtown went...

Edmonton's population is booming, where are all the new proposals?

There are other poison pills in Vancouver too, including sewage and power requirements for laneway homes. Front-back duplexes (at about $1.3M each) are the most common infill in Vancouver at this point, other than 6-storey buildings on major corridors.

Cycling and Active Transportation in Edmonton

The city has redesigned its tableau showing cyclist and pedestrian counts. Somewhat easier to use, imo. It shows a healthy increase in the number of cyclists in February. Link to the tableau

    Edmonton Real Estate Market

The city has put up an interesting tableau on affordable housing in Edmonton, plenty of data.
