I don't think this is the case. They are rightly concerned about costs and scope creep however.

Wasn't this announced in 2015 or something? This thing should have been under construction by the time the UCP took over government - with costs locked in prior to COVID / inflation etc. I think your anger is mis-directed as this failure in project management is almost entirely on the City.

The ring road is an excellent infrastructure investment as is the Green Line. It's not just about providing access for drivers (which is nice), it's about having a functional transportation network for goods and services to move throughout the region.

For a building like this - it's better to not make it stand out.

    OMG that is horrendous.

Good riddance to that cheap ass sign on a beautiful SOM building.

Not really as long as the subgrade and base is prepared properly.

    Roads, Highways & Infrastructure

I don't think most people who live here really appreciate how great the road system is. Sure there are a few issues but driving here is a dream compared to most other major north American cities.

    Water main break discussion

I ain't no civil engineer, but is it not a design flaw to have one pipe so critical to the water supply system that it can cause this much of a problem? Why not have twin 5' pipes rather than this monster 8' pipe? Build some redundancy into the network.

They better not be getting rid of the unique street light standards!

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

If only the city had done regular maintenance on the streetscape over the years (ie. properly replacing broken bricks and mortar) we wouldn't have to do a multi-million dollar overhaul and could allocate that capital to improving another street.

The downtown station entrance buildings look way overbuilt. No wonder costs are out of control on this thing. Can these just be stairs / escalators popping up to the sidewalk with an elevator somewhere?

    Calgary | Versant | 16m | 5s | Eagle Crest | FAAS Architecture

The problem with Bankview is that it's like a high density suburb...tons of walkup and midrise density but most buildings have a front lawn and surface parking. There's essentially zero retail within the neighbourhood that's walkable so most drive everywhere. It's got the negatives of high...

    Calgary's Downtown Dilemma

I think the conference centre in Calgary Place used to be a theatre - Metropolitan Centre?

Adding even more more dead institutional space to the perimeter of the plaza is not what I call adding vibrancy. 🤣

Yeah I'm not really a fan of the amount of space they are chewing up from Olympic Plaza for this.

    Calgary | Harmony One | 20m | 6s | Gravity Architecture

If there's enough room and soil conditions are suitable you can save money by excavating down at a 45 degree and not shoring. Either that or they haven't done the other side yet.

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

As mentioned - it's a publicity stunt that allows council to appear to be doing something about the crisis while avoiding difficult actions that would make a material difference to planning and development. Like simplifying the zoning bylaw and moving towards form-based codes as opposed to...
