    2018 Ontario Provincial Election Discussion

I'm reading all this and my take is that it's really between Elliot the centrist and Ford the anti Establishment candidate, both experienced. This for the leadership contest as well as whichever one runs in the election. As for Mulroney - I'm predicting a loss or withdrawal - during the...

lol. Very nice short film/documentary. I'd forgotten that many coffee shops are drop in centres.

    Coffee Time

The best Coffee Time in my mind was the now closed one (closed about 2 years ago) at Yonge and Golfdale on the NE corner. Clean as a whistle and very nice Korean lady owners. I walked by the CT at Coxwell and Gerrard a few days ago.. 2 unwashed seniors sitting inside. How do the owners even...

No one objected last week so here is the 2nd in [hopefully] a series of: 'Nows' [taken today] that probably look like they did back... 'Then'. :)

633 Kingston Road. SE corner at Southwood. Then. May 2, 2014. 5:42pm. Already closed for good. This was a goodbye pic. It's even harder now to find a place that makes their donuts on-site at 5am and serves coffee with that perfume of real coffee. McDs and Timmys ain't it. Krispy Kreme...

Didn't they? I took the 'Then' pics in 2012 thinking I was recording something that wasn't going to be for very long. I wonder how many UT-ers had to Google 'Symes Road' or similar. It's off the beaten track.

From my Bloor and Runnymede area walk today. Two 'Nows' that probably look like they did back... 'Then'. Just sayin'. :) Wonderful. They're so authentic they veer into the unreal - like something constructed for a Wes Anderson movie set.

Replying to my own post of 7 years ago. Today I went back to the Runnymede Theatre, formerly Chapters and now Shoppers Drug Mart. Still beautiful inside.

Yes, I remember the enumerators asked what your occupation was. Not much privacy in those days.

This was most useful. Thank you DSC. I found my great-grandfathers business in the 1910 Mights, page 130, at 12 1/2 Don Mills. It's identified as 'Chinese Laundry'. It's where 778 Broadview Ave is now.

What great work Nathan Ng has done in the service of Toronto's history. I've never met him. His work certainly has enabled accurate and illustrative discussion here at Urban Toronto down thru the years. http://oldtorontomaps.blogspot.ca/p/index-of-maps.html .

At its inception in 1913 by the I.O.D.E., it was known as the Preventorium. Then it was used as an RCAF hospital in the 1940s (my gramps - who had a laundry at nearby 2616 Yonge - told me this) and was derelict throughout the 1960s. I still remember the faded RCAF roundel painted on the side...

Sad indeed. I said goodbye and best wishes for the future to the owner lady last Sunday as they were packing up. It's not a renovation, they closed. I didn't ask why.

I just finished the 1940s Toronto and Hong Kong based biography: 'Incorrigible' by Velma Demerson. It's a good read.
