    Calgary Transit

I doubt many shit-disturbers would think twice about jumping a turnstile...it would require human enforcement to be remotely effective. Complex & systemic problem without easy answers. More peace officer presence would certainly help. I also wonder if there is a way to dangle more carrot as...

Calgary Bike Lanes and Bike Paths

As cool as these ideas might be I think are far better ways to direct any funds available for pathway infrastructure. It's a nice stretch of path in the summer, but it's always going to suck in the winter with that amount of shade. It would be interesting to know how long the delay is between...

    Calgary | Calgary Event Centre | 36.85m | 11s | CSEC | HOK

It is a shame that we'll have like 7 years of ongoing construction in that area instead of 3-4.

Temporary parking might as well be called indefinite parking in Calgary. Stampede has been using the Jeff Davison Innovation Lot for over a decade now during the 10 day event (staff/etc). I wonder if the agreement involved Stampede operating the lot on event days?

    Calgary & Alberta Economy

The article hints at it briefly, but how much of this is simply from removing those conversions from the supply? No idea when that would be counted in these numbers?

    Calgary | Green Line LRT | ?m | ?s | Calgary Transit

It's more than a little concerning to see those other major transit snafus (add Edmonton's signalling debacle near NAIT)...something similar seems inevitable for the green line at this point. The obvious VE that nobody ever wanted to consider is going back to BRT design for the short-mid term...

Did they skip the enforcement part?

    Roads, Highways & Infrastructure

I'm sure this would be wildly unpopular, but could the easiest/safest/cheapest solution be a heavily enforced 90 kph speed limit? It's about 36 km from Stoney to Stoney. 24 mins at 90 kph 19:38 at 110kph 17:17 at 125kph But really, most users probably do about half the distance. So 2-4...

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

Could it make sense to keep trying for the re-zoning/DP even if they don't intend to build anytime soon? IIRC there was some speculation that this was always a bit of a pump&dump...

    Roads, Highways & Infrastructure

Any idea if a pedestrian lane is open (and connected to the sidewalks by Cougar Ridge)? It's been hell getting across that TUC to cycle in Springbank.

    Roads, Highways & Infrastructure

It would be extra aggravating for people stuck in the Sarcee/Bow mess if that section didn't open next fall. Being in the mess is one thing, but an alternative remaining closed for no good reason would make it so much worse!

    Calgary | Calgary Event Centre | 36.85m | 11s | CSEC | HOK

Another way to summarize would be that rising costs made it almost certain that the total price tag was going beyond the scope of the agreement, including the agreed upon contingency amounts. CSEC agreed to take on further cost overruns in exchange for removing CMLC from the project - letting...

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

I guess the question is what is the actual purpose/intent of property taxes. I can see an argument that the key thing is generating sufficient revenue for the city's budget; since municipalities are limited in their ability to impose taxes, focusing mainly on property value is probably the...

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

I like the idea in principle, but I wonder if a more targeted solution might be even more effective for this particular issue - like a vacant land incremental modifier, where the extra penalty charge increases with each year of vacancy. Of course the devil would be in the details, like what...

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

The bolded sounds totally counter-productive and would preserve surface lots. It seems like there should be much better ways to manage parking supply...I know municipalities are somewhat limited in their ability to impose specific taxes, but Shirley there must be more they can do.

    Calgary Transit

Frequency is absolutely a make or break for people to use (or continue to use) the service or not. It doesn't take many instances of arriving 5 minutes before a scheduled bus and then waiting 39 minutes for one to actually come by for a person to find an alternative. The user experience of...

    Calgary Transit

As dumb as it seems, I think a big barrier to bus ridership is simply stigma/image/reputation. I wonder if running high freq 'cool-looking' busses on a vibrant route might be as effective as a streetcar? Probably with a full-blown marketing campaign that makes them 'feel' somehow different than...

    Calgary Regional Rail Transit

I don't see a ton of value from intercept lots...they would very slightly move the needle on the pedestrian experience in the townsite, and that's about it. It's also only a really big problem for 3-4 months, but new surface lots would have downsides all 365 days. They recently added about 350...

Tangentially related, but new mgmt plans for National Parks were just released. Liricon's other desired project - the gondola from townsite to Norquay - appears to be dead...
