How familiar are Toronto urbanists with the GTA's suburbs?

I probably wrote this somewhere else, but these days, I rarely venture much north of Lawrence (and I go up that's where I play tennis), too far east of Bayview or much west of Bathurst. South? Yes, I do make it to the Toronto Islands in the summer.

How familiar are Toronto urbanists with the GTA's suburbs?

I spent the early part of my life in the Bayview/Steeles area and then my middle and high school years in Hoggs Hollow. I'm downtown now. As a child and teen, my family and I rarely ventured to what's now the 905 - other than Markham for Chinese food (and that was not until the late 80s/early...

    Your thoughts on French Immersion?

Anywhere from "ahhhst" to, yes, "ass'd."

    Toronto Toronto | Sherway Gardens Expansion | ?m | 2s | Cadillac Fairview | DIALOG

Looks a bit like the Bayview Village store. The Yorkville store is the one I most frequent (due to distance from my home) and I consider it a necessary evil.

    Your thoughts on French Immersion?

Did you by any chance go to a private school and/or take singing lessons? An ex-boyfriend, who is also a Canadian, once said I sounded slightly British. I'm wondering if 10 years of classical singing lessons (along with many years in a school choir with a British choir director) or my years at...

    Your thoughts on French Immersion?

I'm not sure if parents in such families would WANT their children in a mostly Spanish program opposed to English or a mostly English, yet still bilingual program. You DO want your children to know how to speak at least ONE of our official languages - and perhaps without a trace of an accent...

    Your thoughts on French Immersion?

Some provinces offer immersion programs for languages other than French. I know a woman living in Alberta who is sending her daughter to a Spanish program. This is at a public school.

    Your thoughts on French Immersion?

Good for her! I took Latin for one year in high school. My alma mater stopped offering Latin a few years ago and I could not for the life of me understand why. I guess they wanted to focus on STEM subjects. They're probably the only "old line" independent school NOT offering it!

What's with all the anxiety in today's youth?

It's east if you take the long route, west for short - LOL! :P In Canada and the US (and I think, Australia, too), "oriental" is reserved for rugs.

    Your thoughts on French Immersion?

Considering that I want my hypothetical children to be multilingual (English, French, Mandarin and possibly Cantonese and Hebrew), a strong understanding of English literacy is a MUST when they are functioning in a (primarily) Anglophone environment! Not sure whether I'll pursue EXTENDED FRENCH...

    Bloor-Yorkville Scene

There'll be some openings now that Chanel is moving and HMV is closing up shop. Of course, the HMV location probably isn't the best for a luxury brand.

    Toronto Eaton Centre

BCBG is still temporarily closed. Does anyone know why? Was it the flooding?

What's with all the anxiety in today's youth?

Affluent Asian Canadians are still more likely to stay with their families until an older age than Anglo Canadians, though.

Does Toronto's multiculturalism really contrast with the "melting pot" of American cities?

Well, BEING Chinese Canadian, maybe I can offer my PERSONAL perspective (which could be different from OTHER Chinese Canadians - especially non-HK Canadians). My guess is HK's education system - especially for boomers (and older) who attended religious schools. At that time, schools run by the...

Does Toronto's multiculturalism really contrast with the "melting pot" of American cities?

The defence minister came to Canada as a child. I think Bobby Jindal and Nikki Haley are both US-born. Also, Bobby Jindal wasn't "Bobby" at birth. Seems like he took the name when he was older? Note: Chinese Canadians tend to have western names. In fact, I only know two or three people...

What's with all the anxiety in today's youth?

This is my mom's perspective: Boomers were less anxious because while many grew up in relative comfort, they were only ONE generation removed from the Depression and rationing during the war. The stories they hear about living in poverty - from their parents - were much more "real" than to...

What's with all the anxiety in today's youth?

Twenty-five is a good age to leave, guy or girl. I think kicking a child out at 18, however, is "uncaring." However, for many millennials, even those who leave at 25-28 have some sort of help. I hover between X and Millennial and at least half of the people I know had some assistance with...

What's with all the anxiety in today's youth?

Did he leave home-leave home? Or did his parents send him off to boarding school? Not the same thing. As for having things in common with other cultures of the same generation (e.g. Korean Canadians and Irish Canadians who were raised in the same neighbourhood, attended the same schools...

Any Canadian-owned chains of coffee shops?

Surprised they didn't publish this until early February. I think it was gone by Christmas 2015.

What's with all the anxiety in today's youth?

And the Italian, Jewish (and Chinese, etc...) families sometimes consider the "when you're 18 you're gone" form of parenting as uncaring.
