    Toronto Toronto | Ontario Line 3 | ?m | ?s

A lot of Toronto transit enthusiasts have had a curious obsession with subway lines forming a loop in the outer suburbs for some reason. It's an idea that never made any real sense.

    Premier Doug Ford's Ontario

It's a weird part of North American culture that small towns and suburbs should be car dependent while only only big city cores can be walkable. The reality is that small towns can be just as walkable as any big city if they're designed properly.

Bollards in the centreline of the trail at each driveway would do the trick.

    Baby, we got a bubble!?

Somebody watched Glengarry Glen Ross and learned all the wrong lessons.

    VIA Rail

The point is that the extra money you'd have to spend to build a bypass around Ottawa (which would create more problems than it solves) would be better spent making other parts of the line faster. Like the Havelock to Perth section as Alstom proposed.

    VIA Rail

Even if HFR is highly successful I still can't see it. As the numbers roger1818 posted show, Ottawa has almost as many passengers as Montreal. If the Alstom proposal is anything to go by, we can get the trip to Montreal down to 3 hours or less while still stopping in Ottawa. Future capital would...

    VIA Rail

I never understood why some people want trains to bypass Ottawa. Ottawa is either the 2nd or 3rd busiest station on the system, maybe even busier than Montreal Central (Wikipedia is inconsistent on that). Any train not stopping there is giving up a huge number of passengers for no reason. Ottawa...

Hoverlink - Toronto to Niagara Hovercraft service starting 2023

Don't get me wrong, I didn't mean that a ferry should be implemented instead of rail improvements. I'm thinking something like the Amalfi Coast. From Naples you can take a frequent but sketchy train, road based options, or high speed ferry. It actually has a lot in common with the Golden...

Hoverlink - Toronto to Niagara Hovercraft service starting 2023

Agreed, a ferry to Niagara should be as easy to catch as a ferry to the Toronto Islands. A ferry will probably always have trouble making a profit but it would still be a useful service, especially in the summer when the QEW is jammed all the way to Niagara Falls. There's a case to be made that...

Road Safety & Vision Zero Plan

Here's some more information on Metral Drive in Nanaimo, from the Transportation Association of Canada no less. The Nanaimo design has a tactile strip to alert the visually impaired that they're entering space where vehicles cross. Edmonton too by the looks of it. A New Standard for Raised...

    TTC Cartography, Signage, and Wayfinding

Huge improvement over the old way of doing wayfinding signs. Both the mode and the agency are clear and obvious - no more confusion about which buses the sign is pointing to. Now if only they could put in a ceiling. Shopping malls already number their entrances, which is especially handy for...

    VIA Rail

No but high speed trains do often slow down to go through the heart of a city without stopping. Express trains from Milan to Rome, for example, slow to a crawl through Florence without stopping. They still make the trip in a bit over 3 hours. Bypassing cities in that size range is certainly...

The decay of downtown Queen Street East

If someone is a danger to themselves and others they can be forced into treatment. But I'd be willing to bet that most mentally ill people would love to have counselling and prescriptions available. Too often this conversation devolves into people being either bleeding hearts or completely...
