    Town of Jasper Updates

Any clue how development in Jasper works? I'm curious about two things: 1. Are they learning from Canmore and Banff that main streets should be pedestrianized (esp. in the summer)? Patricia desperately needs it. 2. Jasper seems like a post-war suburb. They have an infill policy, but what's the...

Cycling and Active Transportation in Edmonton

It opened the ONE day I decided to WFH this week! Ah. Today, it was still blocked off with signs and trucks. They were doing some more landscaping and touching up the furnishings on the side of the lane. I should have just ridden the "car" lane!

Cycling and Active Transportation in Edmonton

I believe in the power of showing! I'd love to learn to get better at drawing alternatives (or doing our own modelling to challenge city traffic engineers' models). I think that's a reason why the 102 Ave pedestrianization caught on so quickly...

Cycling and Active Transportation in Edmonton

I'm biased, but yes. It's definitely not as busy as the others, but it gets used quite a bit. And I'm not trying to sound snarky, but vehicle traffic here really isn't that high-demand either. I wonder about a future where we might pedestrianize Whyte Ave. Would we want to redirect vehicle...

EllisDon to Lead Prairie Link High-Speed Rail Partners - Edm-RD-Cal

Generally, I agree, and I also recognize this will still be in city limits, but standing on a platform with trains passing can be quite intimidating... and thrilling :) Source: stood next to a 350 km/h Chinese HSR passing by. I once saw a brilliant concept for a station here, but can't find it...

    McDougall Hill Pedestrian Bridge

Says who? And for how long? Remember, our City Plan and Energy Transition strategy is pointing us to a 1.5ºC-compatible city that sees a mode shift. We're in a climate emergency...

EllisDon to Lead Prairie Link High-Speed Rail Partners - Edm-RD-Cal

I can't see this replace Highway 1, but I think there is increasing tourism traffic and attention to the David Thompson Corridor. Some provincial funding has improved amenities and Nordegg is expanding. @jason403 I like your explanations and giving % values to consider in #102. Are you a...

    Warehouse District Park

The new tower is advertising direct in-building access to Corona, so I hope the two skinny staircases can be removed and replaced with a wider, accessible (elevator?) way in through the building like Central has with those Cambridge Lofts. Hopefully that will widen the sidewalk too.

    McDougall Hill Pedestrian Bridge

It's not actually that bad in terms of sightlines as I expected. I went for a walk there last week. There's space for 3-4 northbound cars to stop safely. If it weren't also ~5-6 lanes wide at the top of the hill, a crosswalk would seem very natural.

    132 Ave Renewal

I wouldn't call it creative, but I am definitely very happy to see this suggested for Edmonton! If it's built, you'll see me doing laps around that roundabout on my Omafiets (only when it's not tremendously disruptive to others, of course).

    McDougall Hill Pedestrian Bridge

I've heard the Hotel Mac restaurant has great truffle popcorn. When case rates lower, I'm going to check it out and contribute to increasing bike traffic there :D

    Arc Smart Fare System

Partly this: At the core, because they don't really tackle a meaningful problem. To me, I prefer more transit use over squeezing every penny out of people. Who is most likely to evade a fare? Someone who is either struggling to make ends meet, or someone who is just a bad actor. In the case of...

    Arc Smart Fare System

I don't like that sort of edge-case thinking (also because I kind of want free transit). I say make the service as convenient as possible! That should be the #1 priority. More convenience = more ridership = more net revenue; most people aren't looking to cheat the system! We don't have gates in...

    Arc Smart Fare System

I also submitted as feedback to them that users should be able to tap off of a bus before the bus doors open! In other systems I've used, you can tap off for the "next" station in advance, so everyone can deboard quickly and efficiently. If ridership goes back up, the current set up will cause a...

    McDougall Hill Pedestrian Bridge

I swear I read somewhere that the City recognizes this is a missing link in the Bike Plan. If true, I hope that will create the necessary space for a bike-riding and not bike-walking.

    Edmonton | The Mercury Block | 21.7m | 6s

I know this is not the same project, but it indeed gives me big European vibes with the tall ground floors and the little plaza. It reminds me of a School of Life video about how modern cities are ugly – one reason they gave was that we have forgotten how to build plazas for people! We've lost...

EllisDon to Lead Prairie Link High-Speed Rail Partners - Edm-RD-Cal

The Bow Valley transit system reaches pretty much all the key tourist destinations. Its frequency is pretty low, but that's understandable. I think that raising a tourist tax and making transit free might be a good move in that area in the future. As for folks like me who will venture there with...

    Arc Smart Fare System

Same! I am actually taking ETS more now than before, so am very excited for this. It’s been inconvenient getting bus tickets.

    Edmonton | Valley Line LRT/ Valley Line West | ?m | ?s | City of Edmonton

Interesting! To be honest, it feels like there are too many stops downtown :( I think that's a big difference between Edmonton's transit network vs other cities I've been to or lived in. They'll have one for every 3-4 that we do. Though those were not winter cities. How do you all feel about our...

    Misc. Parks and Greenspace Projects

This project reminded me of the wonders a little bit of water can do for aesthetic and mental health! More please! This is one of the reasons I'm excited for the Groat area of the Touch the Water concept! If you look at Edmonton from satellite imagery, you can see a distinct cutoff between: 1...
