GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

If Lakeshore has so much off-peak ridership that it still needs 10 car double-decker trains even after 15-minute service is restored, then we need to be pushing for service increases beyond just 15-minute local service. Once 15-minute off-peak service is restored, 10-car trains would provide...

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

Given that the 4th platform at Weston is now complete, it is very plausible that they would start 30-min service to Bramalea (or possibly Mt Pleasant) in April. If they were to implement alternating express and local service on UP Express, they would presumably time it with expanded local...

    Transit Fantasy Maps

Following the discussion of how best to connect Cambridge to Guelph, here's a concept for how the Waterloo Ion LRT system could be expanded into a more interurban network using abandoned or lightly-used branch railways. The longer-distance services to Elmira and Guelph would use higher-speed...

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

In the LRT option, the service would be operated by LRT vehicles not DMUs. And in any case my map is not discussing the alignment of the route (this is the GO Transit Service Thread, not the Waterloo Region thread), merely the notion of the Guelph-Cambridge "GO" service instead being built as an...

Or similarly in the LRT option, they could short-turn every other train to train at Fairview to reflect the low projected Cambridge-Kitchener ridership, with the tracks within Cambridge gaining a second ridership source in the form of travellers to/from Guelph:

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

It is feasible but a mainline train couldn't share the on-street alignment into Cambridge so it would need to be built as LRT, as dowlingm describes below: The on-street running in Guelph would make the LRT option a bit slower than the regional rail option but the improved station coverage is...

GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

It's not that simple. Using the existing infrastructure requires us to spend $100+ Million on a grade separation to reach that existing infrastructure so it's not necessarily cheaper. My guess is that it is in fact cheaper to reuse the existing platforms but it is theoretically possible that...

GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

Relocating all of the platforms to the south side of the corridor would not be a small undertaking. Take Cooksville station for example: The current platform would need to be completely demolished to make room for freight tracks, and a completely new platform built further south, with all the...

GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

Well given that they stated that one of CPKC's demands was full grade separation, I assume they costed out full road/rail grade separations at all existing road crossings. However, several of them could probably be omitted or scaled back to save a lot of costs. Here are some ideas to do so...

GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

Because all of the stations are future-proofed for a track configuration where GO has 2 dedicated tracks on the north side and CPKC has 2 dedicated tracks on the south side. See below how the full buildout would look: Kipling Station (no changes. The corridor is already quad-tracked) Dixie...

GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

With all the talk recently about bringing all-day service to the Milton Line, I started looking into the infra along the corridor. It seems to me that given the feds have already offered to fund half of a $1.2 billion infrastructure improvement, the obvious path forward is to create a phased...

Point of clarification: the Netherlands handle this by having free weather-protected and secured bicycle parking at the station, and free weather-protected parking that allows you to park for an extended period of time. They also charge a €7.50/day ($10.90) to bring a bike aboard a train, and...

Bicycles are indeed forbidden from entering the accessibility coach. However those seats are not only for people with accessibility problems. People without disabilities are allowed to sit in the disabled seating area as long as they give up the space for anyone who might need it. Source: GO...

GO Transit Fleet Equipment and other

The 15-minute peak service is not bidirectional, the counter peak headway is still 30 minutes. They'll require at least a couple more trainsets to provide 15-minute counter-peak service. But indeed the fleet requirement wouldn't be anywhere near double the current schedule. They did provide...

GO Transit Fleet Equipment and other

This is basic vehicle maintenance that GO has been doing without issue for half a century. There is no reason for us to investigate whether these particular cab cars will be maintained just as all other coaches get maintained. "Just trust me bro" is perfectly fine with me given that the whole...

Noticed this alert on the Via Rail website. Trains 84-87 are the Toronto-Kitchener-London-Sarnia services. Maybe there's a planned track realignment on the Guelph Sub on the 9th-10th of March.

Yes that's what GO Expansion is for. However the current plans for Front-Spadina station only include the Barrie line (express and local) which is a bizarre arrangement. It would make more sense for it to serve LSW, Kitchener and Barrie local trains but not expresses.

Hmm, curiouser and curiouser... It definitely appears like they have some sort of plan for all these cab cars, but then again this is the same agency that built new tunnels under the 401 for the Kitchener line and then left them unused for nearly a decade.

I expect that all GO Trains will stop at Exhibition and East Harbour once the OL opens, in an attempt to divert passenger flows away from Union and thereby reduce dwell times there. Shorter dwell times at Union means more capacity for frequent service. Express trains definitely won't stop at...
