Cycling and Active Transportation in Edmonton

Going at that speed on the painted lane (or any street for that matter) makes you invisible to drivers. I've had countless near misses (or near hits) with people pulling out of driveways, opening doors, even drivers speeding way past the speed limit just to get in front of me and turn right. I...

Streets are not paved on many of those settlements. The gondolas are a huge leap in accessibility.

    Municipal Politics

Ashley's views are right but not very popular. Building within the limits will ultimately move from larger to smaller properties which is not what the majority wants. The resulting property price increases will need to be balanced with more affordable housing initiatives. Not a simple thing to...

What countries have you travelled to?

If you are doing Oaxaca you should look into expanding into Chiapas. San Cristobal is great and there are canyons, rivers and jungles to explore. It' been 20 years for me but I am sure there are touring companies now and the road network should be a bit better.

I tried to get into the internal courtyards yesterday to have a look but couldn't without having to leave my bike behind. Seems like an opportunity wasted but I guess the economics and the location just don't work for a remodel/repurpose.

    Edmonton | Valley Line LRT/ Valley Line West | ?m | ?s | City of Edmonton

I looked at a few (Paris, Mexico City, Montreal, Toronto). All have north to south orientation, all have lines running in the general direction they actually follow. If there is generally agreed standard, why does this have to be so different?

Is this the first development in the area with no resident parking? I am very curious to follow how it does.

What countries have you travelled to?

Feel Undertraveled here: Mexico: almost all of it, missing the Bajas and a couple states in the south. US: California, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, Arkansas, Alabama, Florida, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Texas, Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont...

    Terwillegar Drive Expansion

I don't think so I don't think so as they usually put their name everywhere and on this one is not obvious, I will look for logos next time I drive there.

    Terwillegar Drive Expansion

And disruption to traffic has been minimal, other than the reduction from 70 to 50 Km/hr there is no noticeable impact. Credit when credit is due.

How many McMansions will fit on the land and how many trees will be gone? These are the opportunities that the city needs to take to reclaim river valley land and turn it into public space.

Urban National Park Option for the River Valley

It would be interesting to know if all the private ones pay their fair share of property tax. Are any of the public ones in the city former private ones that couldn't pay? Golfers can drive out of the city and golf courses should convert to parks that most people can enjoy.

Urban National Park Option for the River Valley

The only Urban National Park in Canada had some non-legal (like most of Edmonton) bike trails. Bikes were prohibited outside of existing paved and gravel roads (as in used by cars as well) and enforcement went way up. That to me is a strong precedent. I don't understand where the Sierra Club...

Urban National Park Option for the River Valley

I like mountain biking too much to support this.

    Misc. Transportation Projects

The quarry paved bike path is outstanding, IMO the best of it's kind in Edmonton With this bridge we will be able to safely access the nature trail that goes all the way to Fort SK on the other side of the river. The nature trail is gravel and although I love it, it may be a good idea to pave it...

    Edmonton | Cambrian Crossing | ?m | ?s

This is always a fun debate. A provincial mandated greenbelt is the only way I have seen densification happen when no geographical obstacles exist. Not seeing that happening here.
