David Miller: Toronto's future rides on commitment to transit

Like most people, I'm disaponited by the reduction in transit funding. But I have to admit I'm pleased that metrolinx was able to stick up to the Miller and not build his legacy projects, instead buidling lines they felt (rightly or wrongly) were best for the City. It's too bad the needed...

Toronto Parks vs. Montreal Parks - and public use

Not sure about that. Most of the women I date have extremely low standards. If you want to pick up in a park go to Allen Gardens at midnight. Guarenteed success, although I reccommend asking some tough questions early on in the relationship... Anyway, there's a great little parkette...

Rob Ford wants to terminate the "War on Cars"....

I agree commuting is probably too much of a focus in the world of transportation planning, but the reality is much of the investment is based on accomodating the massive commuting flows. I would love to see a modest investment from the City to improve our off-street bike network. We have a...

Rob Ford wants to terminate the "War on Cars"....

I don't really feel like arguing the methodolgy behind my numbers (I don't know much, but I know how Toronto gets to work), but here goes: No, my numbers aren't from Pd1, it was a grouping of smaller zones repressenting downtown south of Queen. It was done for a specific project in which I...

Rob Ford wants to terminate the "War on Cars"....

If I keep answering your questions do you promise to acknowledge 16% of people don't cycle to work each day in the City?

Rob Ford wants to terminate the "War on Cars"....

To get the cycling information you need to sign up to use their data. For example, for people travelling downtown here's the mode split as of 2001: car: 23% bike: 1% GO transit: 30% TTC: 42% Walk: 4%

Rob Ford wants to terminate the "War on Cars"....

Jeez, touchy. The Transportation Tomorrow Survey (TTS). It's a pretty cool resource. Basically, rather than ask people if they bike (lot's of people bike, just not all the time) TTS asks people how they got to work that day. That way it takes into account people who's mode of travel...

Rob Ford wants to terminate the "War on Cars"....

An actual study showed the bike mode split in Toronto is 1-2%, not 16%. The question was skewed.

Rob Ford wants to terminate the "War on Cars"....

Transit and density will have an impact on oil consumption in the City, bikes lanes won't change much. 1% of people bike, doubling that will not make much of a dent. 25% take transit, that's where there's room to change how people travel.

Should cities start blocking urban sprawl?

Banning sprawl is tough, but if we ever wanted to really change behaviour in Ontarion it would be one of the solutions. If sprawl were banned without other measures the costs would be enormous (the big sales pitch for sprawl is its abaility to produce affordable housing). Others measures would...

Rob Ford wants to terminate the "War on Cars"....

I agree 'the war on cars' is a bit dramatic (wars have generals), but in the last few years we've also seen: - Harbour / Lake Shore dual left and right turns removed for pedestrian / cycling reasons - bike lanes on Eastern Avenue - St. Clair Streetcar right-of-way - pedestrian scarmbles at...

If I could use photoshop I'd show how all of the normal square actvity + the protest group could fit within the smaller sqare proposed by RioCan.

Milton: School bans parents from driving kids to school

I've heard of school boards that have banned new two-storey schools because the teachers refuse to walk up stairs. Asking teachers to walk to work would be comedy...

Rail: Ontario-Quebec High Speed Rail Study

I think if the trains took 3.5 hours (i.e. they were as reliable or more reliable than flying) and ran hourly (similar to flying) you'd see a big jump in ridership and people would pay for it. I think a lot of people today would like to take the train but don't because they can't count on the...

I think the blue machine is probably putting in tiebacks, but I could be wrong. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tieback_(geotechnical) In short, they're steel rods sticking under the road that help strnegthen the foundation wall until the interior structure is complete.

    Transit City Plan

Technically it would be more sideways than backwards. Brings up an interesting dilema for pro-subway people (like me). Would you rather see the Eglinton LRT delayed so subway planning could start from scratch (gravely risking its chances of being built for another 10 years) or would you...

    Transit City Plan

Well, it will help. Rumour has it the Eglinton LRT / subway debate is still ongoing behind closed doors. As Miller fades away (and with it his obsession with being the LRT king) the chances of common sense prevailing here go up. Also, there's a growing chance that this project has missed...

I heard there were also tax reasons to keep rental buildings as condos. Not sure, just what I heard. For this project to go ahead would require site plan approval from the City (including TTC sign-off, which would be tricky) and the developer to commit to building the project (also tricky).

    Transit City Plan

Sorry if this is in the wrong thread (The Finch West thread is closed.... or taking a sevn-minute coffee break): I'm looking for the funding or construction status of the Finch West LRT. I've looked around and called the TTC and found the following: -The EA is wrapped up (or nearly...

The CBC has to do a 'plight of the Canadian Farmer' story once a week, it's in their charter. Depending on the weather they'll switch stories to 'Heavy Rain Swamps Farms, Hopes and Dreams Shattered'. Next in the rotation comes a story on Newfoundland fisherman, then the Governor General's...
