GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

I don't want to be too hard on the guy, because I know how hard it is to make youtube videos and succeed, but I'll lay a few things out if you're asking. There are a lot of things he says that, while they might be true in some parts of the GO system are not indicative of the real experience. He...

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

I decided to watch a few more and it had a similar feel. I agreed with much of the substance, but there was a tone that irked me. In particular, he will speak about towns and cities (that I would agree are in need of help) in a really derogatory way. It feels wrong to me that we should be mean...

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

I watched the "Not Just Bikes" video above, and I found it to be a little patronizing and frankly, incorrect. Certainly I have my gripes about GO, and the parking garages, but there seem to be some omissions that indicate a lack of research. Most of the parking lots he visits are already slated...

    Toronto Toronto | 147 Spadina | 82.8m | 24s | Hullmark | AUDAX

Great tower design. A few urban design pet peeves at the ground level that bother me, but they'd be easy to fix without changing the design much. For one, those planters need to go so the building can meet the street. Right now it's a makeshift fence. Secondly, architects, and a lot of other...

    Toronto Toronto | Raglan House | 91.95m | 28s | Camrost-Felcorp | Arcadis

I went for a walk and took a look at the building in question. It's very much one building and it looks to be a sleazy move on the part of the developer to get around relocating these people. They might get away with it as it's two addresses, but it's absolutely the wrong thing to do ethically.

    Toronto Toronto | 1799 St Clair West | 150.5m | 45s | Sequoia Grove Homes | IBI Group

I was trying to illustrate the potential of the area with a hypothetical. Yes, there is no plan to extend the ontario line, but there has long been speculation of an alignment that would connect to dundas west station, or another spot on line 2. This site is less than 2km from line 2, or a 2...

    Toronto Toronto | 1799 St Clair West | 150.5m | 45s | Sequoia Grove Homes | IBI Group

This area in particular has exceptional potential for transit expansion. Given a GO station, an Ontario line stop, an extended 512, and a few key road expansions, this area could support enormous growth. Timing is obviously a caveat, as none of these things exist yet.

    Toronto Toronto | Motto | 47.85m | 13s | Sierra | RAW Design

It's already a blander street with the monochromatic paint colour. This makes sense. I have to ask, is there a reason so many new buildings are long glass walls set back from the former streetwall with the rest of the podium cantilevered overtop? Not sure I'm using the right terminology, but...

    Roads: GTA West Corridor—Highway 413

As compared to what other major cities? The most well "expresswayed" cities in the US are places like Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Los Angeles. Not exactly premium destinations, and Los Angeles has worse traffic than we do. The problem with the Spadina expressway is not that it would have...

Road Safety & Vision Zero Plan

It's my understanding, (I'm no expert) that in some cases they have to accommodate for the fact that there may be trucks or other vehicles that are larger than the lane that have to occasionally use the road. Theoretically it allows for a narrower lane for the majority of drivers, rather than...

    Toronto Toronto | West Don Lands: Blocks 17 & 26 | 141m | 43s | Aspen Ridge | Core Architects

I think the doom and gloom is vastly overstated. I think the north south right of ways are far too wide, and the blocks between front and mill should have been subdivided by another road, or pedestrian area. But the area also has some important successes and is a better template than most other...

Toronto 145 Pears Ave (THC, 3s, TACT Architecture)

Having been by here a few times, I seem to recall that these look better in person than in the pictures. Could just be my imagination though

    Transit Fantasy Maps

I don't have the ability to make my own map, but I've always wondered about an alignment where, rather than having the "ontario line" dip down to exhibition, there would be a "reverse U" from exhibition to the portlands. To be more clear, if the ontario line went straight across Queen and then...

    Roads: GTA West Corridor—Highway 413

In fairness, the crosstown is the first new transit line since the Sheppard line opened. thats 19 years and counting. Before tolling starts, it takes massive capitol investments to build these things. The 400 series highways have consistently been widened and expanded at enormous cost while the...

    Roads: GTA West Corridor—Highway 413

The bottlenecks here are a problem. The new lanes they are adding to the 401 will, with absolute certainty, make matters worse. The 401 and 407 are such poorly managed assets that we are nowhere near the point where we need to think about building a new highway. Tolling, truck only lanes...

    Roads: GTA West Corridor—Highway 413

I suppose this is our central disagreement. I don't believe the benefits will be significant (In fact I think it will be detrimental overall), and I feel that the evidence supports this claim.

    Roads: GTA West Corridor—Highway 413

Fair enough. But you're now arguing to build a multi-billion dollar highway based on the potential off peak benefits. Seems to me like the arterials we already have can get you places pretty quickly during off peak times. The government should be working to cut commute times for people. This...

    Roads: GTA West Corridor—Highway 413

Ironically, saving 30 seconds is probably generous. Historically most highways (probably all of them eventually) increase commute times for drivers. Traffic congestion is directly correlated with the number of cars on the road. This is the reason that highways with more lanes have more...

    Toronto Toronto | West Don Lands: Blocks 17 & 26 | 141m | 43s | Aspen Ridge | Core Architects

It will, at minimum, triple in population, likely much more. That doesn't include any development slated to happen south of the railroad tracks. I agree with some of the issues regarding how this area was developed, but I also think that "ghost town" is hyperbole. I think there are valuable...

    Toronto Toronto | West Don Lands: Blocks 17 & 26 | 141m | 43s | Aspen Ridge | Core Architects

I can't say I agree with that characterization. The area is maybe 30 percent complete. I do think that they've built the public infrastructure suited to a dense neighbourhood with only moderately dense buildings. Even if this block is developed to the least dense proposal the community wont end...
