    2018 Ontario Provincial Election Discussion

Yes, unless she somehow announces a revamp of her party's platform to something that would actually be competitive outside of Hamilton and Windsor. I can only assume that the current ONDP leadership has lost any motivation to form government, and seeks only to serve the niche issues of its...

I don't think we're that far off from Tech Libertarians shouting "NO NEED FOR TAXATION FOR PUBLIC TRANSIT! MUSK SAYS WE'LL BE TELEPORTING SOON!!1!" We'll have to get the hyperloop up and running first though. Priorities are priorities.

More shelter space is great. I wish that the Annex Residents' Association was just as welcoming to new housing for future generations, in the form of condominiums, as it is to homeless shelters

It's not that they made a "call", per say, but they probably said to the developer something like "If you remove some of the brick on the facade, we/Council would be more amenable to your proposal". I have absolutely no idea why they would ask for the removal of the brick details though.

Ugh, so nice. Allied is just the best. Credit where credit is due. Can't wait to see the arches once the brick is attached, it's going to be sublime.

Which, at this point, they really should allow. Then half the buildings would be 150 meters, and half would be taller. It would at least result in some visual interest. Maybe Mirvish-Gehry will result in a crop of 300 meter condos in the area... (assuming the new LPAT would allow it)

When you remove American nationalist optics from the equation, I really do think Toronto is the strongest contender. (Culture+Talent+Cost savings+Transportation+Site potential+Immigration+Weaker dollar) If I were Jeff Bezos, I'd build two new smaller HQ's; one in the States that gets the label...

    Amazon Second HQ

My understanding is that our corporate taxes are quite low. It's income tax that is the main issue. American management won't like it. If our taxes are higher, I have a feeling that the cost savings from the Canadian dollar and employee salaries would outweigh any tax burdens. Tech talent in...

Knew I was forgetting something. The DC area, certainly. The taxes in DC are too high. It'll be some suburb in Virginia or Maryland, depending on operating costs.

    King Street (Streetcar Transit Priority)

Random lunch break epiphany: Do you think that the complaining King Street restaurants are seeing less customers because it is easier for locals to take transit to superior options now with the pilot project? If I lived in the Entertainment District, and I could suddenly get to King West or...

    2018 Ontario Provincial Election Discussion

Yep. Which is why I want to see the numbers. It could fall within the typical gender gap between left/right. My feeling is that the gap is still wider than typical. Just look at McGuinty. He was portrayed as "Premier Dad" and received a fraction of the vitriol that Wynne does, despite his (IMO)...

https://www.thestar.com/opinion/star-columnists/2018/01/18/misogyny-sexism-clearly-a-major-factor-in-wynnes-ultralow-ratings.html I think the evidence speaks for itself. Wynne's approval ratings and voting intentions are lower among men than they are women. I'd like to know the exact numbers...

    Amazon Second HQ

Valid point that tech giants *in the past* tended to locate themselves in remote locations. I don't think that's what they're looking for right now. Amazon's corporate culture is constructed around being in Seattle. They're not Google or Apple. Baltimore isn't on the shortlist. Taxes in...

You'd think that, with all the money circulating in and around King West, there would be a market for condos with more innovative architecture and/or cladding (Mirvish-Gehry is the exception). Something like 1 Yorkville. Nobu is going to be a breath of fresh air for the Entertainment District.

49.9% of the population is of below-average intelligence. I think you could apply 30% (or more) to North America, and indeed the world, at large.

If the floorplate is an issue, I'd almost rather they go for a diagrid look. Something like 1 Undershaft in London. Utilitarian and stylish.

Fingers crossed that pre-set brick replaces grey spandrel as our cladding standard. I'll take 20 of these around the city in various colours, please and thank you.
