Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

What I find interesting is that Pottery Road's been shifted over a little, probably when they built the DVP there. Also, that hedge came down. That's probably seriously enhanced the safety of this curve.

Thanks for that, that bears investigating! And yeah, I did... I love your videos. :)

You've got some of the best videos, man. :)

    Second Line... mostly...

Some of the posts here have prompted me to go back into some really old photographs I have and put them up here for your consideration. These will be of particular interest, I think, to you folks in northwest Mississauga. In the winter of 1988-1989, my parents took a trip to the Caribbean, and...

Anybody know what this is? York Mills & Bayview

I wondered if anyone every used it as a road. It looked kind of like they did, but it was hard to be sure. Looks like it might have been a little handy if you were heading south on Bayview and wanted to head west on York Mills. It looks like at one point it was the best way to dodge the dog's...

    Lost Road: Fifth Line West

I don't think it originally did, actually. If you look at the atlas of Peel County from 1867, they don't line up. The grid south of Eglinton is kind of irregular and I think might have been partly based on usage rather than imposed top-down like the lines north of Eglinton. It's clear that at...

Bathurst Street gap, Holland Marsh/East Gwillimbury

Here's a follow-up from last summer that I forgot to post. An accidental and serendipitous pair of shots taken from nearly exactly the same spot... I didn't plan this at all; I only noticed the conjunction of the views when I was going through the old photos to compare them to the new. This is...

Roads: Six Points Interchange Reconfiguration (City of Toronto, UC)

As interesting and exciting as it always is to see some new development in town, I can't help thinking this is a retrograde step. With the sudden proliferation of traffic lights, and some of them alarmingly close together, unless they're scrupulously timed to facilitate traffic flow (something I...

Bathurst Street gap, Holland Marsh/East Gwillimbury

I wish I'd known about it early enough in the 90s to have actually driven it. Well, at least I walked it and saw it. The only reason I did is that I happened across an article in The Star (kind of ironic, because of shots of a Sun box dumped on site) back 7 or 8 years ago. Got out there only...

    Ontario Flag needs replacing

I took a few minutes and gave it a shot. There might be other ways of arranging things, but I have to say, I don't like either flag that shows the whole trillium anywhere near as much as FNTS's original layout. I think he's right about the size. I tried one with the right-pointing tip at the 50%...

    Lost Road: Indian Line Road

That must be fascinating to you now. I wish I could have experienced that. I was still a kid living in Nova Scotia back then. :) I think, but I'm not really sure (because I wasn't really paying attention), that sometime around 1990 my buddy (who I mention in my Fifth Line post) once or twice...

    Ontario Flag needs replacing

You need to go back in the thread and ask FNTS, it's actually his design. I could reverse-engineer it in Illustrator, but he's likely got the original design of it. Mind you, I understand why it's cut off the way it is. He has it set such that the point falls exactly on the 3/4 mark on the...

    Ontario Flag needs replacing

I think it would take a while. :)

    Lost Road: Fifth Line West

And, just for good measure, there's also this. The photo below looks south down Erin Mills Parkway across the current course of Thomas Street, as it looked in the winter of 1990-1991. This view looks down the original course of Fifth Line. Today, you'd see a walkway through here with houses on...

    Lost Road: Fifth Line West

McCarron farm, Fifth Line West McCarron farm location on (closed) Fifth Line, MapArt This is the other end of the closed section of Fifth Line, about a mile south of the section above that’s now vanished into a parking lot. It’s just north of spot where Erin Mills Parkway (once Fifth Line)...

    Lost Road: Fifth Line West

The following is information I compiled about the property on the west side of these shots (the area in trees in all shots, opposite the warehouse) in October of 1990... COMPILED INFORMATION CONCERNING FIFTH LINE WEST, PEEL REGION AND A CERTAIN PROPERTY THEREON Began investigation Saturday...

    Lost Road: Fifth Line West

This is a journal entry I wrote about Fifth Line West back in June, 2005. Discovering the lost city: Fifth Line West Fifth Line West, south of Hwy 401, MapArt For years now I've had this interest in old, abandoned roads. I don't know for sure what it is. Maybe it's the fascination and slight...

    Ontario Flag needs replacing

I'd like to offer the following as a variation, worked out by me and couple of friends of mine, on this excellent design. This version preserves the colours we've had for 50 years and a lot of our history is winked at, but now it looks modern, clean, fairly simple, but expressive with FNTS's...

    Lost Road: Fifth Line West

I remember that. It's the only intersection I've ever seen that went from being signaled to being signed. When they built the bypass to the north, or not long afterward, they took the lights out and replaced them with stop signs. Very strange. When I first had my license, the guys and I spent a...

    Lost Road: Fifth Line West

Heh, I just noticed this thread had responses from last month and I hopped on to see what had been said. I assumed this was a thread of mine! Fifth Line was actually where I got my start in exploring lost roads. I used to live in Meadowvale, and one day in September of 1990 I was out driving...
