General cycling issues (Is Toronto bike friendly?)

Next thing he'll ban bikes outright. Soon it will be time to resurrect the Dutch resistance slogan from World War 2: https://untranslatable.co/p/amarens/eerst-mijn-fiets-terug

In other words, it's all about using this as fuel in a culture war designed to enrage his supporters. Instead of scapegoating Jews or immigrants, this time it's "cyclists" and clearly Ford doesn't care if they live or die because he thinks they won't vote for him anyway.

You mean neighbours like the Bloor Annex BIA? https://toronto.citynews.ca/video/2024/10/24/annex-businesses-tell-ford-to-back-off-bloor-bike-lanes/

    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

Sorry, supporters of car lanes, but arterial roads are a scourge for pedestrians, especially children and the elderly.

    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

Who is going to be angrier: the driving commuters who might save a minute on their commute, or the people on bikes whose lives are being endangered? This policy is actively endangering the lives of my teenage children. I cannot think of many things that would make me angrier

    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

The public outcry will happen with or without Chow. This is putting people's lives in real danger, for nothing but silly culture-war antics.

Maybe because she is a car-brained suburbanite herself?

Certainly not what I expected when I moved here 15 years ago

    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

Doug Ford inadvertently makes a great argument for the ancient Greek system of electing government by sortition. If you entered all the adult residents of Ontario into a lottery and picked a random name from among them, the chances are quite high that that person would be better qualified to be...

Dundas West/ Bloor Mobility Hub +interconnected hub network (Metrolinx)

Yes, the only "slow zone" on the UP is in the approach to Pearson

Cycling: West Toronto Railpath (City of Toronto, Phase II Proposed)

I think it's disingenuous for him to claim that he is supporting the project when the likeliest outcome of his complaining is that it will never happen at all. And he also keeps belittling the project -- the CBC quotes him saying that "for that amount of money they could build rapid transit on...

Cycling: West Toronto Railpath (City of Toronto, Phase II Proposed)

Has Metrolinx every cared about this? So what this comes down to is some councillors trying to shoot down a project because it doesn't directly benefit the residents of their ward.
  13. F

Cycling: West Toronto Railpath (City of Toronto, Phase II Proposed)

Is there any evidence that you can have one without the other? Does it have to be built on Metrolinx's terms? Or is Metrolinx going to walk away from this and say, nevermind, we'll reserve the land for further track expansion?
  14. F

Cycling: West Toronto Railpath (City of Toronto, Phase II Proposed)

And the complaints all undersell how important and valuable this project really is ("a two-kilometre walking trail" (Matlow), "nice to have, ... not a need to have" (Bradford))
  15. F

Cycling: West Toronto Railpath (City of Toronto, Phase II Proposed)

Elliott makes another excellent point: And Bradford shows what a manipulative populist he is -- writing in the Toronto Sun to use this as a culture-war wedge issue against the mayor
  16. F

Cycling: West Toronto Railpath (City of Toronto, Phase II Proposed)

I guess you have never been on the existing railpath (prior to its disruption by work on the Bloor GO station). This is a very busy corridor and its extension will be extremely valuable both for recreation and bike commuting
  17. F

Cycling: West Toronto Railpath (City of Toronto, Phase II Proposed)

Yes, but will it? The typical Toronto outcome is that this will not get build any time soon. I for one would rather have a cost-inflated railpath than no railpath
  18. F

Cycling: West Toronto Railpath (City of Toronto, Phase II Proposed)

Deferred for a decade, and then it will cost even more

If there was a Darwin award for bad business decisions, they would be a strong contender
