I just came across an article about new subway cars that Bombardier will be making for the Moscow subway. My impression is that with only a few touches, our own cars would look way more appealing from outside. I am puzzled why TTC picked such a conservative (external) design...

Incorrect. CN Tower was the tallest structure in the world for quite a while, so it might not be as recognized as Eiffel tower, it is definitely more known than Space Needle. When I was coming to Toronto in 1992, I knew about CN tower, but had no idea what Space Needle was.

The south tower is topping up; they are working on mechanical floor now: The tower is visible from almost everywhere in North York. Here is a view from north, west, and south:

They are working now on the second floor of the podium on the west side. Form today, March 29/2013:

From today, March 29/2013: Considering that the height will almost double, the towers should look slim and tall. No idea about retail, sorry.
