As well as intra-provincial. A lot of what you see on the 401is the modern industrial warehousing system.. Just-in-time delivery strings both inputs and outputs onto the highway system. A train load of widget parts stored in a warehouse has been replaced by truckloads of parts delivered at...

And through the middle of Lindsay (as well as Uxbridge). Drawing lines on a fantasy map is easy.

    VIA Rail

Perhaps. I suspect, and some on here are saying, that the problem is either a potential deficiency and/or an intermittent one so it might not have shown up during testing. Not knowing the industry, a reasonable person might think that one of the industry regulators might have a view. I...

    VIA Rail

Fair point about train size (i.e. number of axles) but if the finished product rolling off the assembly line is a single car/power unit, one would think it, in and of itself, should be safety compliant.

Those elders must be really old. I started out life in what is now dubbed the 'Upper Beaches'. I don't think I ever saw water.

Dan - Have they imposed similar speed restrictions in the US? It seems that equipment has been in service since around 2017. I wonder if Siemens is tossing any money into the hat to rectify (no pun intended) their deficiency. If there was a comparable safety-related defect discovered in...

    VIA Rail

Perhaps, but earlier information suggested that the 'shunting' problem was unique to CN. Besides, my understanding is the Siemens Charger was built for the North American market. Edit: My earlier post suggested the problem might not be isolated to Siemens, but it might be since Amtrak operates...

So neither a new problem nor isolated to Siemens Chargers, it seems.

    Train Spotting

Something little different. For some reason this popped into my FB feed. For some reason I couldn't copy the text that accompanied it but, apparently this was a conversion in Austria in the 1930s. DC overhead power was inverted to 3-phase AC, then rectified to DC and fed to motors attached...

I believe that is just a road allowance/former road. It seems to follow the general survey baseline for the area. There were crossing/joining branches west of there at Burketon and a couple east of there near Cavan.

Hence the reason why the Class 1 railways prefer LCL, 'loose freight' and light service to be moved over to the roads. Shortline operators can more easily get by because a lot of their business is bulk and they have cheaper and more flexible labour costs. I imagine if an unused siding is...

GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

From what I hear about MX's on-time project record, that seems a bit rich.

Las Vegas North-Plans For Niagara Falls

With particular regard to "inner city neighbourhoods", while I don't know the detailed history of the area, I get the sense that, historically, Niagara Falls was a fairly industrial town that just happened to surround an environmental feature. The OHPC and its predecessors no doubt employed...

^^ For clarity, that's in Englehart.

Toronto Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport | ?m | ?s | Ports Toronto | Arup

Things do evolve, but in a liberal democratic/capitalist economy, governments can't simply steamroll private ownership. Zoning can change but existing, legal land use remains 'grandfathered' (that's probably an unacceptable term now). Reexamine all you want, but a private landowner can't be...

Toronto Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport | ?m | ?s | Ports Toronto | Arup

I would suspect the argument is the area has 'evolved'. Maybe the government should start bulldozing downtown single family homes to speed up density.

Toronto Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport | ?m | ?s | Ports Toronto | Arup

"Actively harms people"? I'm curious what "active harm" either the airport or sugar plant, or perhaps another example causes. I suggest there is a difference between something that causes 'active harm' and something that does align with someone's gentile view of what the urban environment...

Toronto Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport | ?m | ?s | Ports Toronto | Arup

But you can't 'zone' something out of existence. If the government doesn't like a land use, such as the sugar plant, they simply can't declare it illegal land use by changing the zoning and expect it to pack up and leave. How would a government expect to attract and retain industry or commerce...

They declared bankruptcy last year and were selling off assets. I don't know how successful they were but it seems that if there is still a bunch still sitting in the yard, not very. What remains will probably just sit there until the court orders it sold for scrap or finds a salvage company...

    Canada and the World

Stipulated, but between the highs, there have always been lows, somewhere, even if doing nothing but refits. The current National Shipbuilding Program is supposed to break that cycle (I know, famous last words) through a steady diet of naval and CCG builds. We have absolutely no facilities...
