    Canada and the World

It's one thing to ramp up traditional shipbuilding from it's atrophied state but quite another to try and create an industry from complete scratch. Unless we want to try to compete on the world market (folly), there is no rationale to try and establish and unique industry for a dozen boats (maybe).

It is also very hemmed in. There was a proposal to extend the main runway (12/30) an additional 1000' but that was shot down. If they were required to add RESA areas, I'm not sure there would be much room.

Urban driving ranges are typically placeholders to help pay the taxes until the landowner can get the approval for what they really want to do with the land.

    Quebec-Windsor Corridor

It's barely out of the gate and already the add-ons are piling on. I wonder what the cost would be to upgrade Canadian to HSR. 🤣

Las Vegas North-Plans For Niagara Falls

I'm wondering if someone who has the power could merge the recent bits of this thread and the Marineland thread. They seem to stepping on each other.

And whether or not there should be public money involved, which the latest announcement has all the trappings of. And private industry is free to lay a proposal before city or regional government at any time.

I'm not sure I get the attraction of paralleling a major casino and/or theme park hub in an area with a particular natural attraction. There are likely a number of reasons why Las Vegas is in the middle of a desert and Orlando is not on the coast, but I imagine really cheap land was one of them.

    Quebec-Windsor Corridor

Indeed. It was the "paralleling the corridors" part that would be tricky. Towns and villages, Chatham, etc.

    Cruise Ship Terminal

I'm surprised they don't propose to auger out dock facilities in the Welland Canal itself. I mean, it's like right there - only 10 kilks as the poker chip flies from Fallsview.

    Quebec-Windsor Corridor

Unless the alignment is designed with high speed in mind, particularly curves and grades, it would be difficult to turn HFR into HSR. Without looking, I'm going to guess that the current mainline corridors in southwestern Ontario are not high-speed friendly.

Just barely, but I do recall that if you stood just north of Steeles on Yonge - about where the CN crosses, you could see the church spires in Richmond Hill, and mostly just green in between. I hung around with guys who lived in Markham and it was a small town centred on Hwys 7 and 48, running...

    Cruise Ship Terminal

I suspect it is fairly complicated Paul. I'm not up on maritime or labour law, but suspect that the rules for a foreign flagged vessel are the same whether the vessel is carrying passengers or gumballs. If it is a Canadian registered vessel then federal labour law would apply. Ship movements...

    VIA Rail

They'll commit to Quebec City - Montreal first, keeping Quebec happy and making the Conservatives look like they hate Quebec when they threaten to kill the funding.

Las Vegas North-Plans For Niagara Falls

I realize this government treats municipalities like a stepdaughter's bastard child, but I wonder if anybody has bothered to ask what the city and region think of all this. There's decent odds that many of them heard about this at the same time we did. It's one thing to play fast and loose...

Las Vegas North-Plans For Niagara Falls

Oh goody; a Niagara Strategy. What is with Fords and theme parks? Sure they could open up gaming in the area by breaking up their agreement with Mohegan. All they have to do is toss a whole lot of our money at them.

It was offered as an option in second year.

Why does Toronto pick such horrible names for public spaces, stations, airports etc.?

Well, if you go back far enough, that descriptor could define a lot of places inside Toronto's boundaries. People and their governments have been giving names to places that some people thought weird since forever. I was just watching a clip involving the city of Peculiar in Missouri. Don't...

Back when we still had to drive around receding glaciers, I started at Seneca at Yonge and Sheppard then moved to Newnham (Finch). Phase 1 only. No DVP - still Woodbine Ave.

    Premier Doug Ford's Ontario

He - and he's certainly not the first - thinks the voting public is fairly dim, and we keep proving him right.

    2024 United States presidential election

I'm not so sure. If the 'risk of personal harm' was that compelling in the same sense as the draft was, we would see a lot more asylum seekers, persons from 'right to life' states, etc. moving north. Also, the border was a lot mor open back then. Less than half of US citizens have passports...
