I appreciated what the Journalist at 5:36 had to say: "It turned out most of these condos were actually built with investors in mind. That meant they were small and basically bought to be rented out. They became the de facto source of most of the rental stuff in the city for decades. But...

    Edmonton | Stantec Tower | 250.84m | 66s | ICE District Prop.

It's not completely unrelated. My brother lived in the Tour des Canadiens in Montreal for a year. They had a catastrophic failure of their elevator system. For 3 days he had to walk up 36 flights of stairs to his place. Then for another week only one elevator worked for 50 floors and it was...

    The Quarters

Wait, so "Free Market" Calgary has a Municipal Development Corporation while "Big Government" Edmonton does not? As usual, stereotypes don't match reality. In all seriousness, I really wish Edmonton would look at an arms length MDC to push forward the big number of city owned spaces in the city...

    Edmonton | ICE District Block IJ | ?m | ?s | ICE District Prop. | Next Architecture

Is there anything stopping Ice District from just parking the tower for now and focusing on Phase 2? Anything in their agreement with the City?

I'm afraid there also just isn't any money for grand ideas at the moment. And the public doesn't seem to be interested in paying more for grand ideas.

    Homelessness, Addiction and Mental Health

Indigenous leaders are quite involved. Enoch Nation for example is running and operating the shelter/transitional housing in the old Coliseum in. Niginan Housing Ventures and Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society are two of the strongest and most effective organizations in the city, I can't...

    LRT Safety

She These are different services provided in different spaces. Shelter space is different from drop in space. In short, shelters are a place to stay and sleep but not really a space to "Hang Out" during the day. Most shelter's are a large room or series of rooms with beds/mattresses as a place...

    Homelessness, Addiction and Mental Health

And its only going to get worse unless something major changes, that number will easily hit 10k in the next few years. The economics of being a single person on Income Support who isn't valuable to the labor market doesn't add up. And with unemployment in Edmonton at 9% there are a lot of people...

    LRT Safety

I know I've harped on this before, but the Drop-In centers we used to have operated as day shelters. We would keep people warm and safe, run events, provide food, and connect people with resources. However, governments have moved away from funding drop in spaces because they are not "Solution...

EllisDon to Lead Prairie Link High-Speed Rail Partners - Edm-RD-Cal

I would frankly use the train if it was 100 km/h and took longer than driving. Trains are just a superior way to travel. However, I know that I'm not representative of most folks. I am happy to take the time and use transit and am not attached to my vehicle as a matter of identity. If we want...

I added some details and links in the Winter City thread. Keep in mind any designs are very provisional.

    Winter City

So, I've been sitting on this for awhile as I think there are still a few moving parts. I am not personally involved anymore but I understand some parts of the plan may change. However, I saw that Councilor Stevenson had responded in another thread with some details. The Edmonton Ice Wall and...

    Downtown Real Estate

I don't think e4c owns this plot. I'm pretty sure its privately owned. Alex Taylor still belongs to COE and e4c leases it for super cheap and I don't think the land extends across the alley. I think the new building in the Quarters is their only planned development.
  14. SarcasticMarmot

    The Quarters

I actually wonder if the journalist has conflated the shelter beds and WEAC. 50 shelter beds and 17 transitional beds is pretty close to the existing role of WEAC. I wonder if the new building is just moving services of WEAC. Building a new building does nothing to change operational funding so...

EllisDon to Lead Prairie Link High-Speed Rail Partners - Edm-RD-Cal

I disagree, it needs to be substantially faster for Albertan's to be willing to deal with the hassle of navigating Edmonton or Calgary without a car once they arrive. Further, a constant 200km train would not work on the existing track with so many local crossings. You basically need to grade...

Nuestra, the new coffee shop on 112 ave has an opening date! Nov 13. I am beyond excited to have something new in the area!

Does anyone know what is going on in the former Impark lot across from the Hys Centre on 101 st? I can't find any info, hopefully more than just paving the parking lot.

Looks like the generally pick supportive environments. I imagine Alberta's recent international attention will nix the bid pretty quick.

Edmonton never defunded the police. We have the 2nd highest level of police funding in the country. We have a grand total of 2 public safe injection sites, and have never implemented safe supply, despite the rants of willfully uniformed opinion columnists. Lots to be critical of with how we have...

Vista 33 was great as a kid getting to see the city and telephone museum. But alas, I am sure it is much more useful to the 5 people with offices up there now. Perfect example of the loss of focus on the public good when crown corps go private.
