Cycling and Active Transportation in Edmonton

I believe it’s been this way for at least the last two years now (maybe someone else knows for sure). I’ve seen the same green vehicles clearing the double wide paths this year too: Definitely a bit hit and miss, though. My neighborhood, which is on a 5 day clear schedule, was done last night...

The Edmonton Method - Snow Removal

And all the adjacent shared use paths around LRT stations will likely not even be touched until Friday (or the weekend), probably. With snow accumulations of this extent the 3 day clearing policy for major walking paths is essentially a giant middle finger to anybody who doesn't get around by...

The Edmonton Method - Snow Removal

Yup, it's been sidewalk riding for me whenever the adjacent MUPs are impassable. It's extremely frustrating just how piecemeal some of the clearing of paths are, though. I wish they'd put MUPs on their own clearing route, rather than having them combined with all the sidewalks in a given area...

The Edmonton Method - Snow Removal

Yeah, the freeze-thaw cycle, not the cold, is the worst part of winter cycling for me. If neighborhood side streets are a slushy mess, I'll just ride carefully on the sidewalks (of course, slowing down for anybody walking, or hopping onto the road for a bit). People have been pretty good at...

Cycling and Active Transportation in Edmonton

The second one is complete, except for the NW corner of 111 St and 23 Ave, where there is a detour for LRT construction.

The Edmonton Method - Snow Removal

Sigh. I hope I don't need to wait until Thursday again until all the paths are cleared.

The Edmonton Method - Snow Removal

Paths still not cleared today in the SW. According to the snow clearing map, almost all the neighbourhoods have been done, and the arterials/continuous paths (eg Malmo to South Campus, 121 St) have been left for last, seemingly. Who makes these decisions? Some bus stops along 111 St...

The Edmonton Method - Snow Removal

This is what the Blackmud Creek bridge at 111 St has looked like since Saturday. Pretty much the only way to go south of 23 Ave aside from 91 St. Even walking, let alone pushing a bike through this is difficult. There has to be a better way than having to wait up to three days after a...

The Edmonton Method - Snow Removal

On the other hand, I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of residences and some commercial properties that had their walks clear by Monday, so at least those can be used for now.

The Edmonton Method - Snow Removal

Really wish there was a higher priority contingency clause to clear multiuse trails sooner following larger amounts of snow - the fact the some major paths, like the LRT trail along 114 Ave, South Campus and Blackmud Creek bridge were pretty much totally unrideable (and in some parts extremely...

    Capital Line LRT

Traffic change pattern was in place as of this evening. Pedestrian detour is through Skyrattler.

    Capital Line LRT

Yeah... probably best avoid that area this weekend. I don't think there was even a pedestrian/multiuse path detour in place either.

Cycling and Active Transportation in Edmonton

On the topic of traffic signals brought up in the Valley Line thread, does anyone else feel that the MUP crossing along 114 St at 76 Ave near the train station is pretty much red 95% of the time? Coupled with the construction closures around that area, I find myself actively trying to avoid it...

    Neighbourhood Renewal

Especially now that we're starting to get into some of the 1970s-era neighbourhoods which seem almost to disregard anyone but vehicles in their designs. Many of those sidewalks and roads are now 50+ years old and definitely showing it.

    Capital Line LRT

The Saddleback/111 intersection is a nightmare for active transport and pedestrians as it is....ugh...

Cycling and Active Transportation in Edmonton

New section of 111 Street MUP appears to be done.

    Capital Line LRT

Closing off the entire side of MUP between 23 and Saddleback? Well that's going to be really annoying.

    Capital Line LRT

There's a temporary bypass(?) looking to be ready at the NW corner of the 111 St and 23 Ave intersection now (sorry, I don't have a better photo).

    Capital Line LRT

A concrete-poured pedestrian detour near the 23 Ave/111 St intersection!
