Agreed, this isn’t great for seeing new developments and all of that. But from a pure housing affordability standpoint, I think it’s interesting to see all the promotions and incentives and literal rent decreases in this area, shortly after 6 new projects finished with 1000+ units added to the...

Great example of build more housing, even if it’s “new luxury apartments”, and it impacts pricing. There’s a bunch of older $1300 apartments that are now going to have to drop to $1100 in the area to have a chance competing with this new project.

    Downtown

I never stated whyte ave led to the decline of our downtown…? I stated that it’s always existed as competition and divided our vibrancy. In the 2006 oilers cup run, where did everyone go to watch and party? What other city would have people doing that not in their downtown? And I’m not...

    Municipal Politics

I’ll cast my bet now: Cartmell wins. I don’t think sohi beats him, and I don’t think a new option can beat the name recognition Cartmell has already. But the council is more than the mayor. They’re just 1 vote. So I’m more interested in what sort of “team” he’s trying to build and if any of...

    Downtown

Agreed, but Calgary is significantly larger in terms of city proper pop. and in terms of downtown workforce/residents. They punch above their weight class because of the HQs too. But Calgary I still find to be more consolidated. Beltline/railway vs our massive river valley/whyte isn’t...

    Downtown

I’m not suggesting whyte ave is “downtown”. I’m suggesting for a city of our size, having a vibrant, commercial, entertainment, arts street like whyte ave be seperate from our proper downtown spreads out the places people go. Same with 124th, brewery district, and Oliver. Anejo, cactus, local...

    Downtown

I could imagine part of the “too big” idea also comes from the general population of the entire city vs the size of our downtown. (Not to mention whyte ave almost being like an extension of our central entertainment/Main Street/tourism/arts space). Our core shouldn’t be 30 blocks east to west...

    General Food & Dining Thread

One of my theories for Edmonton’s lack of vibrancy downtown is also because of our transportation system. I don’t have data to back it up, but I’d be fascinated to know, compared to other cities, what modes people use to get downtown, and then how long they spend moving from the end of their...

Do we need to abandon any pursuit of density over 6 stories in the quarters?

    Downtown

Might start to change as the city grows and traffic worsens, but yeah, I agree. The 20-30min commute from the henday in to DT makes it an easy choice to double your square footage for the same price to many.

    Wellington Bridge Replacement

I wonder if the arches are 1) extra, unnecessary cost, 2) risks for graffiti/unsafe activities maybe? A shame though, they were unique and beautiful.

Valley Line LRT | TransEd/Marigold | City of Edmonton

They’re working hard on 156st west side sidewalks. Probably giving it a final push the next few days before the winter weather finally sets in. Grateful for the warm fall. Hopefully helps this project not fall too far behind.

Valley Line LRT | TransEd/Marigold | City of Edmonton

If anyone wants to express support for more TOD around the west line, there’s a survey open for engagement about 156st and Stony Plain Road. Some locals are attempting to organize against any sort of densification above townhomes, so comments in supportive of density along this route (which has...

Valley Line LRT | TransEd/Marigold | City of Edmonton

Definitely could use some signal timing upgrades. Glad to see that identified. Crazy that bikes are stopping at 102st when there’s almost never traffic. Or the wait times at 99st by the citadel…brutal as a pedestrian. No wonder people just cross the tracks. Standing around for 90 seconds with no...

    Municipal Politics

Hmm. Was sort of hoping for an external hire of a more veteran leader. Don’t know Eddie though, I’m sure he’s awesome. Hopefully it goes great. Just feels like bringing in some outsider knowledge of a city that’s more like 1.5-3mil in size would be helpful. Was Eddie a part of the electric bus...

    Arc Smart Fare System

Tap off doesn’t matter within the city for fares. Although if you’re a fan of the city making data informed decisions, you might see tapping off as a helpful way to provide data on trip starts/ends. Nonetheless, it’s confusing how they’ve communicated (in guessing maybe because they don’t...
