Toronto Restaurants of the 80s and 90s

For those of us who grew up in the city/suburban Toronto in the 80s and 90s: which ones were your favourites? I remember going to Lime Rickey's (I think it was on Steeles?? It was near a Toys R Us) for a friend's birthday several years in a row. We were in elementary school and we always...

    School Vouchers

Not all private schools are "elite" and all "elite" schools (e.g. UCC, BSS, Havergal) offer numerous bursaries to families - more than they did when I was there. I was just at my 20 year reunion and one faculty member commented on how more and more Old Girls (alumnae) are supporting bursaries...

    North of Bloor/Downtown Box: Toronto-born vs. non-Toronto/GTA-born

Toronto born (to immigrant parents) and raised. I spent my childhood and youth in suburbia - North York (Bayview/Steeles at first and then made my way to the York Mills area in middle school), but moved downtown after university. I don't drive much (don't want to, anyway), so it's really...

    Bloor-Yorkville Scene

Hate the new entrance at 151 Bloor.....it feels so closed up now. I hope La Societe would be able to survive. Any clue what's going on at the old Hermes spot? I saw people clearing the place out last night.

    Holt Renfrew (includes hr2)

Depends on the store. If you compare flagship to flagship, then yes, it's certainly true. However, I was at a (the?) San Francisco store recently and it was dreadful compared to TEC.

So any rumours on who is taking over Michael Kors yet? Too early?

Anyone know what the deal with Tutti Pizzeria is? Are they closed for the season or gone for good?

Where have you lived in Toronto?

North-central until I was in university (went to school in Kingston, but parents were midtown-central (okay, north-ish, since we were in the Bayview/Lawrence area). Now downtown/central and have been since 2003.

Boutique programming and inequality in the TDSB

I suppose they should phase out French Immersion, too. I sure hope they don't enforce that!

Are Mi'hito and The Alternative Cafe STILL opening at Yorkville Village? Mi'hito seems to be covered up and last I checked, The Alternative Cafe is still not open.

Blo Blow Dry Bar has moved to 154 Cumberland according to a Tweet.

I hope replacement spots will come quickly. Otherwise, Bloor would look pretty empty.

Boutique programming and inequality in the TDSB

EXACTLY. However, the media and so-called "activist groups" don't think that way. They ALWAYS put race as the #1 factor. It irks me, personally - I have brought up economics as the primary factor to several people and they always argue otherwise, and no matter how rational I try to be, they...

Boutique programming and inequality in the TDSB

This is true. People like to play on the race issue over economic because discussion on the latter is still a "no-no." That said, I've noticed non-white families - particularly Chinese (and to an extent, Indian) Canadians, are more likely to choose private school over boutique programs at...

    Restaurant Comings & Goings

After a few years (?) under new ownership, the Yorkville location of Crepes A Gogo finally changed its name to Yorkville Crepes.

    Restaurant Comings & Goings

I'm a couple of years older than the oldest millennial (statistically speaking, anyway) and I agree. MSG can have a WORSE effect on me than caffeine, so I try to avoid it at night. My grains are more varied than my parents' - I eat quinoa, bulgur, freekeh, sorghum, etc, etc... they balk and...

    Toronto Toronto | Yorkville Village (was Hazelton Lanes) | ?m | ?s | First Capital | Kasian

I know a new restaurant is opening in Yorkville Village later this year, but I forgot its name! It's by Chase Hospitality Group. And does anyone have details about this one?

    Restaurant Comings & Goings

Could be because the main clientele are Toishanese and more recent arrivals (who aren't even all that recent - they came in the 70s-early 90s) Cantonese prefer Markham or Agincourt? And the younger, CBC hipster crowd don't think places like Nobel are "cool" enough?

How authentic are Toronto's ethnic cuisines to people from?

Thai restaurants tend to be run by Chinese in the GTA. And sushi places are often run by Chinese or Koreans. Anyway, I'm SICK of all those cultural appropriation debates. It's getting a bit extreme.

Boutique programming and inequality in the TDSB

:( What are they going to do with the building? Also, is "alumnus" a gender-neutral term now? My university (Queen's) does this, and it bugs, coming from a girls-only high school (and having taken one year of Latin). Our media (both digital and print) refer to us as either an alumna...
