    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

West Village seems well suited for a dystopian chaos zone. And then in 50 years we'll repeat what we did/are doing with EV

I think a lot of winter driving by humans happens at speeds way higher than a computer would calculate to be within a reasonable risk tolerance. Hard to articulate, but days like yesterday most of the time it feels like you're in control while out of control...not sure how a computer would...

Red line north and blue line west (and green line SE) are pretty darn close to full grade separation - at least from cars. I wonder how much savings could be found if operators handed over to autopilot at Sunnyside and Kerby Stations (and then take over the next inbound automated train)? Perhaps...

I wonder how the counters treat cyclists cutting across the middle between SW and NE corner. Those counts seem awfully low, I see active users more often than not. This shows most of the significant inputs and outputs down like 30-50%. The EB-NB turn movement dropped from 919 to 210 in the AM...

Ooph. IMO it's totally insane and just perpetuates the whack-a-mole cycle. It only makes sense if you add lanes down Bow Trail and build an interchange at Richmond Road and add lanes to Sarcee and someday build another interchange at OBCR and another one at 85th and on and on and on. We also...

Only at 12 Ave...for 17th you had to climb the ramp to cross the tracks, and then you could descend stairs on the east side of Macleod if you wanted to...but you could only cross on the south side of 17th and there wasn't even a beg button.

    Calgary Regional Rail Transit

Kinda long-winded and no earth shattering information, but a there's a bit of background on the Liricon/Parks Canada relationship and you can get a sense of what the proponents are like (IMO Adam is pretty reasonable; Jan seems out of touch) Not sure if link is working - its vimeo dot com...

    Roads, Highways & Infrastructure

Speed limits are followed and enforced about as much as they are for cars (i.e. barely at all). I agree the Canmore example is generally the best option, and I'd love to see it here. It's a pet peeve of mine when they build wheeling lanes that force slow speeds while also making it less...

Can you clarify - do you mean a MUP instead of concrete sidewalks, and also a painted bike lane...(where exactly?) on each side of the road? Something like this? One tricky thing is speed limits. Based on the design above, I believer they will still classify that kind of bike lane as 'on-street...

    Infill Development Discussion

I think as of August the only RCG properties in the city will be ones that: - successfully applied for land-use redesignation to RCG before May 2024 - applied for a DP between May 2024 and Aug 2026 Everything else (that isn't new enough to be R-G) is reverting back to the various forms of R-1...

    Infill Development Discussion

The question is...are there even any RCG properties in the city that have not already been/are currently being developed? It was funny seeing council refuse the amendment to keep zoning based on approved LAPs...several said things like "we need a city-wide plan for this" without a hint of irony.

Out with a whimper. Whadayagunnado. But the gutless hypocrisy from the Nimby councillors during amendments was. beyond pathetic.

    Calgary Regional Rail Transit

I suppose it doesn't matter much at this early stage, but it seems silly to limit it to Edmonton considering the first project will definitely involve Calgary, but maybe not Edmonton. It would at least make sense to leave it open and find the best candidate in the province. But most likely they...

Depends on stage configuration, but there's no reason Saddledome can't seat ~18500 + 1600 floor seats for a concert. Promoters usually just choose not to (and these days a show that might want to simply ain't coming here). 8k standing is a huge stretch (especially for a concert), and you'd...

New Indian Village and Enmax park, a new bridge over the Elbow and new Ops building (closer to 20 years now) and some significant operational/storage changes (which you probably meant with 'back of house') Also the whole park flooded 13 years ago (that was 13 years ago?!?!?!?) - they slapped...

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

Grandstand + standing room has barely any more (if any) capacity than Saddledome (3/4) + floor seating. Saddledome in the round probably has slightly more. Saddledome has more premium seats and suites; Grandstand has some excellent premium venues, but they are tailored to rodeo and evening...

    Calgary | Green Line LRT | ?m | ?s | Calgary Transit

If we had a magic crystal ball we could have bit the bullet and dug up 8 Ave from ~2020-2024 and it would have aligned nicely with peak WFH years. But I imagine relocating utilities away from 8th is much easier said than done considering 7th isn't really an option and a lot of the time there...

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

On a 50-100 year timeline we could definitely use more giant plots, especially adjacent to transit lines. This one would be pretty close to West Village, but I'm not sure what other big plots we'll have in the second half of this century? Bottom line for me is that there is a pretty big...

    Calgary | Green Line LRT | ?m | ?s | Calgary Transit

Trade offs with each option. I would think a full optimized single line at surface could perform about the same as a busy interlined subway (especially if you factor the time spent on stairs/escalators). But a single line underground could fly, and you'd have no extra system resiliency issues...

    Calgary | Green Line LRT | ?m | ?s | Calgary Transit

How many cities are building their 'first' subway tunnel? Could it be that most cities are just having to go under other subways? I've never had the impression that 8 Ave subway will be particularly deep. But darwink's photo raises a thought for my idea - you could do a shallow trenched station...
