khristopher - I don't actually believe the level of transit use has anything to do with how pretty the stations are. Tokyo's stations are every bit as lacklustre, if not more, than ours, but they are heavily used. Even Paris's stations are for the most part banal, and frequently filthy with guck oozing from the tiles everywhere, and huge long connections. Yet people use the subway in Paris.
LA's metro has stunning stations and entrances. Nuff said on that front I guess.
It has to do with the density the of the city, the extensiveness and reliability of the networks, the kinds of accommodation made for cars in the city, etc.
