What's exciting/terrifying is the range of outcomes is so big compared to previous elections; a new mayor and a bunch of new councillors for sure, with the incumbents potentially facing challenges - Chu and Joey Mags both have actual scandals but there's been some pressure on Carra and DCA. It could be a centrist mayor with a largely centrist-to-progressive council or it could be an uncivilized toddler trying to push the city off the rails with help of a swarm of UCP aligned councillors. Or it could be something in the middle (except for the mayor, I suppose - only two candidates who might get elected). Tonight may well be a turning point in Calgary's history, and the next chapter could be called Renaissance or it could be titled Dark Ages. Here's wishing...
 
As I write, it looks like Demong was the only one who was able to keep his seat. Carra is in tight, but behind......
 
Is it petty to respond to a 4 month old post from a deleted burner account.... Yes. Does it still give me a distinct sense of schadenfreude... Absolutely!

WOW that wasn't even close! The epically feckless contrarian and now former councillor Jeromy Farkas has been defeated, with now former ward 3 councillor Jyoti Gondek being elected the first female mayor in Calgary's history.

The opinion polls were very tight, basically calling for 29% vs 29%, but Gondek pulled out a decisive 45.1% victory against Farkas' 29.9%. A massive upset, and a major victory for the future of our city. Most consider Gondek to be a direct successor of Naheed Nenshi as her political views are in many ways even more progressive. Prabjhote Kaur "Jyoti" Gondek is simultaneously the first female, first female of colour, and second person of colour to be elected to the office, as well as quite likely the most highly educated individual to ever hold the post. She holds a PhD in Urban Sociology from U of C, as well as a BA in Criminology from UBC, and a Masters degree in Organizational Sociology from U of M. Approximately 300,000 people voted in last night's election, with around 175,000 of the votes going to Gondek, and the remainder going to her 26 opponents, two of which garnered over 10% of the vote, with one nearly breaking 30%.



Another major victory tonight was the election of Amarjeet Sohi as Edmonton's first non-white mayor. Another huge lead in what was thought to be a close election, Sohi also won with 45.1% of the vote, with no other candidate able to garner more than 100,000 votes. Just over 230,000 people voted in last night's election, with around 105,000 of the votes going to Sohi, and the remainder going to his 10 opponents, two of which garnered over 10%, with one surpassing 25%.

Ward 2 - Jennifer Wyness (Magliocca spanked at 3rd place)
Ward 3 - Jasmine Mian
Ward 4 - Sean Chu (leading, election unconfirmed)
Ward 5 - Raj Dhaliwal
Ward 6 - Richard Pootmans
Ward 7 - Terry Wong
Ward 8 - Courtney Walcott
Ward 9 - Gian-Carlo Carra
Ward 10 - Andre Chabot
Ward 11 - Kourtney Branagan
Ward 12 - Evan Spencer
Ward 13 - Dan Mclean (Urquhart spanked at 3rd place)
Ward 14 - Peter Demong

Of the 14 councillors, only 7 won their wards by more than 4%.

Yes, with 15 points separating Gondek from Farkas, it wasn’t the close race the polls suggested. Either the polls severely underestimated Gondek support, or virtually all the undecided voters went to her when it became clear that it was a two person race. I definitely saw a lot of Gondek signs pop up around Marda Loop in the last couple weeks.

It’s also clear that Farkas had a 30% ceiling on his support. Enough to squeak by in a divided field, but no match for a consensus candidate, which Gondek became.

He's a conservative who has headed up the Chinatown BRZ and their continual battle against bike lanes and density. Not a great fit for the ward, which had 3 more progressive women finish 2nd, 3rd and 4th with a combined 60something percent of the vote. I've been assured by campaign strategists of the highest order that vote splitting doesn't occur, but it sure looks like that is what happened there last night.
