I went to Cavalcade of Lights at City Hall on Saturday night. Nathan Phillips Square was packed with people. The elevated walkway was also open, but the city forgot to clear all the snow and ice from the walkway, nor did it do anything to light it up, making moving around the walkway and getting up and down from it a dangerous affair.

Even the connection from the walkway to the Sheraton Hotel was open to the public. I was up there during the fireworks. It provided a great view of the fireworks, plus an aerial view of the heavy downtown traffic on Queen Street.

The lighting at NPS and on the City Hall towers that night was primarily green. Did it have something to do with the Grey Cup and the Saskatchewan Roughriders in town?

What's with all the crappy Christmas lights this year. Why did they only do the stumps of trees. Its like the people putting them up were too lazy to put them on the higher branches. They did the exact same thing on King St W this year. Just doing the trunks instead of the whole tree making it look all incomplete. Very disappointing.

I thought some of the lighting was a little underwhelming too. It just didn't seem festive. I suppose it's a hard act to follow after last year's Cavalcade of Lights.

What happened to the blue strobe lights on the Christmas tree? That was the only decent aspect of the calvacade of lights.

Thanks for the pics, Wyliepoon. It seemed very underwhelming compared with last year, and like mentioned above the stumps and loss of the blue and strobe lights on the main tree seem like pretty big mistakes. Miller will probably blame this on budget shortfalls. If the city can't provide a light show maybe it's time to divi up the downtown core to the highest bidding private company and let them throw an annual display with the od banner giving themselves recognition. Actually come to think of it that's a great idea, think how if let's say the banks had sections of the city to illuminate how each year they'd try to out do their competition.

At this rate next years cvalcade of lights will look more like this.

Cavalcade of Toronto lights..not bad!

Wylie: Good COTL pics! I have always liked the new Toronto City Hall-it is now hard to believe it is slightly over 40 years old now. I like the TTC CLRV s in traffic-good pic with a good angle. It seems to me that Nathan Phillips Square-a good winter gathering point to me-has been lit up better in the past I recall. The fireworks look neat-and if anyone has any pics of that tree with the blue strobe lights that BC mentioned, that's one I would like to see. LI MIKE

NPS Blue Christmas tree 2006...Nice!

Wylie: That blue christmas tree looked neat last year-I am a little biased because blue is my favorite color, though. LI MIKE

I went ysterday and I liked the fireworks but the lighting is terrible. I passed by Mississauga City Hall on the way home, and I thought the lighting there looked MUCH better.

City Hall looks good in green.

It obscures the fact that the city is short of it.

Lighting Design

Mmmm, this year's official Christmas tree and a new lighting display is sponsored by the Bay which got one of its designers Brian Gluckstein to design the overall "look" of the square.

I would have to agree, I hate it, its not very christmas, and the lighting designer Brian tried to be all artistic with trees. It was a major mistake not to place lights on the branches.

I do however approve of the lighting over the skating rink.

As for the fireworks display, they were neat, however the music wasn't very Christmasy. Once again last year's sound track was much better.

Finally, the light projection show onto Old City Hall did not return this year. Too bad, I would have thought it would have become an annual tradition.

As for Mississauga City Hall, its the same design from last year, also the city went cheap and no longer turns on the flood lights to illuminate the building. To save cost, the city no longer turns on the light EVER, not even during the Christmas season when it is lit up in green and purple.
