I was wondering where this was at, I guess they are working with the community on a land swap that would allow the community garden to continue unshadowed. This would also involve a new community hall being built south of the garden.

A proposal has been presented to exchange the St. John’s School site on 120 Street for an equal portion of the Oliver Park on 118 Street and 104 Avenue.

Edmontonians are invited to a drop-in engagement session about a proposed land exchange and rezoning in the Oliver neighbourhood to allow for the development of a residential tower.

Date: Tuesday, December 11
Time: 6 – 8 p.m. (Drop-in, no scheduled presentation)

The City has received a proposal to exchange the St. John’s School site on 120 Street and 102 Avenue for an equal portion of Oliver Park on 118 Street and 104 Avenue. The proposal would make the St. John’s School site a park, and allow for the portion of the northeast end of Oliver Park to be rezoned for a 24-storey residential tower.

The meeting will be an opportunity to learn more about the proposal and provide your feedback to the City and the applicant. Feedback will be summarized in a report to City Council when the proposed rezoning goes to Public Hearing for a decision.

“One of major priorities are park spaces, open spaces, so our residents can enjoy and we feel that this development is not going to allow for future opportunities,” Oliver Community League President Lisa Brown said.

Instead, OCL wants a “best case scenario” where the city keeps Oliver Park as is, and buys that undeveloped land to turn it into a park.

This is fairly significant; OCL usually takes a neutral stance on developments. I only know what CTV has reported on and might not have the whole story, but I'm not sure this is the approach I would have taken.
