Those who know a bit of history may know that when Ottawa was chosen as a capital it was a very small place, a rough lumber town, not that attractive compared to the other contenders and really not much to talk about.

Actually its main advantage was a good location - fairly central and not too close to the border. Capitals are not chosen for their beauty, they are developed and often become more impressive over time.

At least in most places that are not Alberta, where neglect benign and otherwise seems more common.
