Don't listen to this overly negative take. They are super common globally - including in Vancouver today where I am currently sitting. You will also see boba in tea from street vendors in Toronto, New York, Taipei, Tokyo...
 
It wasn't a negative take, but rather a comment about a series fad in 97' that faded and then exploeded again more recently.
