As I understand it, there are people who have money and look for labels or names to show off, but who are not always as well off as they try to appear.

Then there are people who are well off, not looking to show off and are looking more for quality not names.
 
I think the ship has sailed on luxury retail downtown, or at least luxury brands opening their own stores downtown. Why would Burberry, Versace or Prada open a store downtown when they could join the luxury cluster at WEM?

Agreed. People who have real money avoid labels and names and don’t “show off”…

That's a wide brush and for old old money I suppose. Perhaps not as flashy or garish, but many will still have a Rolex or a Tiffany this or that.

I certainly do not have that level of spending power, but could never envision of dropping 10 or 20k on items in a place like WEM; sorry, can't.

Most folks I know who buy those products do so on trips to Van, Toronto or Paris, not here given their relatively small selections and overall 'experience' (see above).
