Edmonton businesses scoring big in Oilers playoff run
The Oilers are still waiting for their first 2017 playoff win, but the series is already helping Edmonton hotels, restaurants and other businesses put big numbers on their financial scoreboards.
“When people are pumped, they’re buying more beer. When people are pumped, they’re buying more food. When people are pumped, they’re buying more memorabilia,” Paul McElhone, dean of management at Concordia University of Edmonton, said Thursday.
“When they’re here for the weekend, they’re going to be in the Manulife Place and City Centre Mall, shopping … It’s huge. It’s in the millions of dollars.”
Tickets for second Oilers Viewing Party at Rogers Place now on sale
The Oilers Entertainment Group is again inviting Edmontonians to come and watch Tuesday's away game with over 10,000 fellow hockey fans.
Tickets for the second Orange Crush Road Game Watch Party--which lets the devoted watch the game on the big screen at Rogers Place--went on sale for $5 Monday morning.
More than 11,000 turned out for the watch party over the weekend.
According to an OEG release net proceeds go to the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation.
Rogers Place sells 10,000 at-home tickets for San Jose game
Edmonton's orange-crush crowd flooded Rogers Place on Sunday to take in a game played more than 2,500 kilometres away.
As the Oilers shut out the Sharks in San Jose, fans seated around the team's home ice in Edmonton cheered along.
Rogers Place hosted a viewing party inside the main arena, broadcasting Game 3 on the high-definition scoreboard to more than 10,000 people.
Edmonton and Rogers Place making tweaks to adjust to Oilers’ playoff fever
Since Edmonton hasn’t witnessed NHL playoffs in 11 years, there are some adjustments to be made to accommodate fans, including washroom lineups at Rogers Place.
Oilers fans don’t want to miss any of the action during games, which has resulted in higher-than-normal demand for washrooms during the intermissions.
“It’s an exciting time in Edmonton and obviously an exciting time at Rogers Place,” said Tim Shipton, senior vice president of Oilers Entertainment Group. “What we’re seeing is that building is packed to the rafters with fans… With that many people in the building… that puts pressure on all our systems, concession, obviously washrooms.”
In response, Rogers Place is making some tweaks to its washroom processes for Game 5 on Thursday night.
“We want to tighten up the queuing process, or the lineups, at washrooms, in particular in men’s washrooms,” Shipton said.
“The tighter the queuing, the less time it takes to get through. We think if we can shave, you know, 10 to 15 seconds off per person going to the washroom, that will make a big difference.”
Rogers Place will have guest experience staff on hand to help streamline the lineups throughout the arena. There will also be markers on the floor to let guests know where they can line up.
