Thousands of job-seekers hoping to work at Edmonton's new downtown arena
Rogers Place has received over 2,000 applications for jobs at the new downtown Oilers’ arena in Edmonton, management announced at a job fair Sunday.

“We wanted to get out in the community and meet some of out new neighbours,” Susan Darrington, vice-president and GM of Rogers Place, said Sunday at the Westin Edmonton Hotel, which hosted the first of two job fairs by the Oilers Entertainment Group for Rogers Place and the Ice District.

A quarter of the 500 positions available at Rogers Place have been filled. There are there also additional openings for hosts and security, and Aramark is hiring another 900 people to serve food and beverages on-site.

Winnipeg offers lessons on being a good neighbour for Edmonton's downtown arena
When the national anthem singer at Winnipeg Jets home games gets to the line, “the true north strong and free,” fans shout out in unison the words, “true north.”

It’s a grassroots tribute to True North Sports and Entertainment, the company credited for bringing the Jets back to the Manitoba capital and which owns and operates the MTS Centre, the downtown arena where they play.

But for Kim Boulet, True North’s director of security, it’s also a sign that the company has succeeded in its goal of being a good neighbour in downtown Winnipeg.

“The arena was coming from the outskirts and moved into the downtown area and we have been extremely successful in being in the downtown area,” Boulet said in Edmonton Friday where she was attending the International Responsible Hospitality Conference.

With Rogers Place set to open this year in downtown Edmonton, she shared what True North does to maintain good relations and partnerships with neighbouring businesses, residents, police, social agencies, volunteer groups and the City of Winnipeg.

When Rogers Place opens…Traffic Downtown
It’s a phrase you’ll hear often over the next few months: plan ahead and give yourself extra time.

Downtown is becoming a destination – not just for events at Rogers Place, but also for the growing number of restaurants, music venues and events to enjoy.

More people exploring Downtown means more traffic. While that’s not anyone’s favorite part of a night out, traffic is a sign that an area is vibrant and doing well. A little extra travel time is a minor trade-off for a Downtown that we can enjoy and be proud of.

The good news is Downtown has a network of roads that regularly handles a lot of traffic.
