Okay, as much as there's a lot o room for improvement on the outside, the inside is looking pretty neat!
It's probably gonna be my top one hangout place in town (I kinda have this love for libraries, haha)

Stephen Teeple, the architect, was interviewed in this article. According to him, the Minler "is “clearly the best” of recently completed libraries across Canada, including the Central Library in Calgary" and he implies that Edmontonians don't like it because they aren't "used to how dynamic it is."

I don't want to be rude, because the interior seems genuinely nice, but these comments reek of some willful ignorance.

he is - like anyone else - entitled to his opinion but so are the rest of us. unfortunately, i'm afraid he didn't just say that, he probably really means it. as for my opinion, that firm does some butt ugly design work and our library is a shining example of it.

it will be interesting to see whether a photo of the actual building ever replaces the shimmering facade in the one single angle out of 360 degrees and the only height depicted in the rendering that could potentially have any interest...

i'm just hoping to be able to say the interiors are a success because from the inside you'll be in the only place where you won't have to look at the outside other than coming and going.

Checked out the library yesterday evening for the first time. Inside was very airy and bright, though I suspect the black paint used in spots will begin to look dirty unless they keep up the cleaning.

Teeple's own marketing staff know the outside of the building is a dog. The portfolio on their website has the interior of the Milner and the exterior of their other buildings. Edit: Within their budget they did a good job delivering what should be an ultra low maintenance exterior.

Not that all their other projects are fantastic or anything but some of them are, some mediocre, and then theres this... they really just screwed us didn't they.

You echoed my thoughts completely. I do find it kind of humorous in its own way though — you'll be able to look at the evolution of the downtown branches and seeing them get objectively worse and worse from an architectural standpoint: from the great Carnegie Library which really fits the idea of a "temple of knowledge:" to the Brutalist Centennial Library, which while divisive and admittedly worn out, was a good, if oppressive, example of the style: to the new Milner and whatever it's supposed to be...
