Hi everyone,

Last weekend I took my bike on route number 4, as I have many times in the past without issue. While the bus went through the curve from Whitemud southbound onto Fox Drive eastbound, my bike detached from the rack and fell off the bus! It rolled across the road and into the curb at high speed, bending the wheel and causing about $500 in damage. Thankfully it was a sunday afternoon so there was not much traffic, and it did not get hit by a car or cause an accident. The driver also handled the situation well, and was able to retrieve my bike.

I've always been worried this would happen as the racks don't seem to hold very well. My bike is on the larger side with an XL frame and 29" wheels, but it is within the specs on the ETS website.

Firstly, let this be a warning to anyone who uses the ETS bike racks, be sure to secure your bike as best as you can. I'll admit I wasn't as thorough as I normally am when loading my bike that day, however I find it very concerning that a total failure can occur so easily with a minor user error.

Secondly, I'm wondering if anyone has a suggestion on someone I could contact at ETS about this? I would like to do some more testing with my bike on the various types of racks they have, so I can be sure it won't happen again, and possibly identify a system problem before it happens to someone else. I submitted a report through 311, but I have a feeling I won't get any response.

Maybe share this with one/all of the bike/transit friendly councillors like Janz, Salvador, Knack, Tang, Wright, Paquette.
